That b**** of an employer of mine is late with vacation money! Anyways, I've been wondering how people get around heaping up the money for a new sword. I'm generally talking about the more expensive swords (300 and up) but if you're poor like me, any aimed for sword will do.
Discuss please!!! I am at a loss.

Saving for a 300$ sword is the same as saving for a 5000$ sword, just takes longer.

Well after the initial investment into a rudimentary collection... My swords now have to pay for themselves...
If I want a new sword... I have to sell a sword(s) to pay for it.
Thats it... no exceptions to that rule.

Right now, I work for myself, and I have to buy and sell stuff to get new swords. Had to sell one of my swords, so the next one will have to wait until I sell something else I relay dint need, witch I'm running out of stuff I dint need! ............SanMarc.

My plan is to start rotating my collection. Sell a sword and put up just a little more than that for the next one. I hope to get to spend some time with a good number of swords, while slowly moving up the line to the higher end stuff.

I just save up a little each week. Some weeks I can save a little more if I get a really good contract or the contract rate is higher than normal (being a sound engineer can be up and down however with income). Anyway after a while I can get a new guitar (other big love) or sword etc.
I make it sound simple but as you all know it is far from it. No kids yet so I can still get myself toys ;D well while the girlfriend follows her career and not wanting them ;D

Since I'm still in school I don't work more than the odd weekend during the year, but during summer I've now gotten a small job to get some money. I get a crappy pay in crappy conditions and with crappy colleagues though, and I'm saving for a 1-2k$ sword, so basically stuff sucks.

No one getting personal loans? When I used to sell Dirtbikes and Jetskis for a crust every man and his dog would get personal loans out to have what they want now. It just doesn't seem like a popular choice in this hobby? Imagine; borrow $5,000, it's only $27 per week, and you can buy all the swords your dreaming of, NOW. Thats how it's done...

I save as much as I can. After my next two swords Im going to stop before christmas as I need a new computer and I have my eye on the new 13" macbooks. That's going to make a dent.
I think its important not to rush into a decision when buying. Often the more you research a product the more you learn in general. Sometimes I get a bug in my ass and I just HAVE to get something which usually ends up with me wasting money or being disappointed.

I think much of it depends on a persons individual priorities. Some people are into food and spend money going out to eat a lot. Some are into gadgets and always want the latest cell phone or whatever. Some are into their cars, or motorcycles, or bicycles, or video games, or a daily latte. But you have to pick. Many of us aren't in a position to have all that stuff all the time. It's amazing how much money we blow on stuff that never used to be a "necessity". Pick the few things that you really like and spend money on those things and let the other stuff go. This is in general and not directed at the OP.
One of the best ways to save money is to not have access to it to spend. This is assuming you have some discretionary spending money. Anytime you have some money that isn't specifically allocated to bills or groceries, put it in a box or jar or something so it isn't in your pocket to get spent on something else. That can build up surprisingly quick. Or just put it on lay away.

Well I've ony just started this collection/addiction with ordering an iaito. That was bought with a kind of unexpected amount of money, from vacation payout at the end of last year. Other than that though, it's going to take saving a little on the side from each paycheck to get anything else. I did have some saved up going towards a Musha, but something came up family wise and I needed to use it. Honestly at the rate this year is going, I might not get that Musha until I get the vacation pay out next Jan. /sigh

Buying swords used to be almost an addiction to me. Not so much any more. I was lucky, as I had been saving for 20 years to build and furnish a new house. I just looked at swords as "furniture" when it came time, and elected to keep my old livingroom and bedroom furniture. That's the only reason I have a number of swords (most bought used) from Albion, Arms&Armor and ATrim. Now it's a bit of a squeeze to buy swords. If I ever get any extra "sword money" now, I've usually been spending it on scabbards from DBK. Oh yeah, and I traded Gus Trim a pistol for my last three new swords from him.

Usually it's just squirreling away money here and there. I've funded several swords by collecting scrap copper a little at a time.
Lately, with the buggered up economy, I've had to start on the system of sell one to buy one.

I have to set aside money; getting personal loans for something that will not appreciate in value is not sound business sense, IMHO. I get that people do it all the time for cars, trucks, SUVs - things that serve a purpose and can be used by anyone qualified- as for swords, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not one to let folks paw around at my blades...they're mine. You wanna paw on a blade, get your own.
All kidding aside, I don't think my wife would approve me getting such a loan for a sword- if I did that, I'd have to make the same allowances for large bulk purchases of shoes, clothes, hair accessories and the like...that's a can of worms I'd like to keep sealed.
My $0.02.
