Ok, this is pretty much the basic format that I was looking for - still not finished, and there will be some more tweaking - but I think that it looks a lot more distinctive, the seperation of categories, posts and stickies is a very good thing and I'm pretty sure that everyone will get used to it... Still, feedback is welcome - this is not 100% set in stone, but there should be no more major changes from here (and I must admit I quite like the amount of detail and the setting of each persons profile in the left hand column). Thanks for bearing with me through all these sudden and unsettling changes! - Paul

Oh and its nice to see that "adults" have the time to pointlessly sift through users and dish out a happy dose of smite. Really, grow up. Its a pointless, arbitrary number at best but the fact that some would take the time out of their day to bother with it is fascinating. Why no overbearing "-1" posts? Is that really the direction you want this forum to be headed in? ......Found the Brie,.....right beside the whine the whole time.

I'll be taking care of the karma situation shortly - in the meantime, to be able to smite you need to send a PM to the person being smited explaining why - so there is at least no 'smite and runs' possible.
Still more tweaking like this to be done, but I think all the heavy lifting and dramatic DIY renovations going on are behind us for now.
Cheers,
- Paul

Honestly, I think the smite button (just like the exalt button) is useful in many situations. There have been a small number of times in the past when I have wanted to use it, but since it was removed, I could not. And I feel that having an exalt without the balance of smite gives a very unfair (and sometimes inaccurate) view of a person to someone new to the site.
Say John Doe has a bit over 100 karma without the smite button around. To a new person, his opinion might be viewed as correct and highly thought of, whereas if the smite button were around, he may only have 40 karma, showing that he has a lot of learning to do and what he says should be taken into consideration but not held on a pedestal. Without balance...what good is any system? I do like that you must send a PM for this new smite, though, since the old smite-and-runs did get annoying.

I think the Karma system is a good tool, it encourages good behaviour, and a friendly atmosphere on the forum. I’m not 100% sure of adding a smite button though, it seems that there is a potential for a spiteful use of the button. I suppose that having to PM the person will reduce spiteful use but I’m still not sure its is a healthy thing to have on a forum.

First, this karma and smite. personally I don´t care much for its be or not to be. So perhaps a post is unessecarily wasted but I have to say
that it strikes me that we sometimes takes for granted we all live in a perfect world with people with perfect judgements and an objective approach to everything since it seems like it is supposed as an information for example newcomers. It is a bit unfortunate that it is taken so seriously because it´s nothing else than very subjective opinions based on whatever no one knows. Perhaps it s a person someone consider an idiot who exalts or smites, of what use is that? or by kids who are impressed when a person has a lot of posts or karma already and gives karma for anything to get attention for it. -Yes, no.. don´t know; -Wow fantastic, have a karma:))))) It´s childs stuff really if used like that and if it is meant to be taken seriously better be without it.
As for friendly, it does not encourage a friendly atmosphere, it encourages an unfriendly and judgemental atmosphere. Especially if you involve pm;s. -I´ve smited you because I think you are a bad or stupid person is the message, or cold be the message and is likely to be taken like that many times. That is not what I call friendly, that is what i call some kind of an aggressive act if I´m to be honest. You don´t do like that on the streets or in other places in the community whitout creating trouble. So why on forums... It´s a confrontational system. it´s not necessary to express everything you think, or every opinion you have about others. To learn that is part of growing up imo.
Nor do I see it as something positive if people don´t want to post things that not everyone agrees with if they feel they likely will be offcially and documented bashed for it without anyone knowing later what it was all about.

As for the new design. I like it, perhaps not the scroll in front of static background but that is just personal preferences, it looks good. Nice color scheme.

No offense Paul, but I feel like I am entering a chinese resturant with the colors, graphics and fonts. But, it does look good if that is the effect you are after.
If I didn't know better, and as a first time visitor, I may think this site is only for eastern type swords.

OK.... two gripes... the search result page.. which looks as follows and itd be nice if the forum would allow pictures to display a little larger... Other than those two things ... i have no complaints... and hell... I can live with either of those.... Nice work, Paul.

I don't care for the smite button because I feel like I'm nobody's daddy here so who am I to punish them. Other than that, I'm starting to like the new look. Sorry about the earlier post, Paul, I don't do well with change, or maybe it's the resistance to it that's the problem.

My one (and I think only) observation is that a given post, regardless of how short it is, occupies a large amount of screen space because of the info on the left.
I say observation, and not complaint, because it's in no way harmful or annoying to me. Might I suggest that the "Member Info" be placed to the left or right of where we currently have the name, rank and photo (and user phrase)? It would halve the space taken up.

ARGH!!!! This is all beige, brown, and sandy. Maybe make the posts' background white like it used to be? I really don't want to sound condescending, because I know that Paul has worked a LOT on this, and I appreciate his dedication and awesomeness, but... With all that said, I must admit that I HATE this look. It's not classy, it's not refined... it's just busy and monotonous. And yes, it does look like a cross between a Chinese restuarant and an egyptian temple. In other words, a BIG no-no. Sorry Paul... we still love you! ;D -Slayer

I think the karma system with a needed PM is perfect! It will still allow smites if a person really feels it's needed, and should cut down on pointless extended rants back and forth between two posters. No, it isn't a perfect world. Police DO exist to protect innocent people from the jerks out there. I know we have moderators here that are supposed to do this but it seems all to infrequent for my liking. (Flame away if you wish!) If someone feels that they have been smote without cause all they need to do is post about it. Say who smote you and the reason they gave. Let all here judge for themselves whether it was deserved or not. You don't like being judged by your peers? Tough! Deal with it! This isn't some kind of stupid blog board where anyone should be able to say anything they want. It's a SWORD INFORMATION FORUM. We do have a "Cafe" where it's a more relaxed, informal atmosphere, and any non-sword related posts should be there. And you know, it's funny, but the cafe, where almost anything goes, has many fewer rants and arguements then the rest of the board. Go figure. As far as the new look goes, I like it! It exactly matches the settings I have set up for Windows! Same colors and all. I say keep it.

And you know, it's funny, but the cafe, where almost anything goes, has many fewer rants and arguements then the rest of the board. Go figure. And there you really contradicts yourself. -- I don´t see any connection between a functional "SWORD INFORMATIONAL FORUM" and the karma system, especially not if it means taking up space with arguing about smites a.s.o. And I don´t think it makes for a better and more focused forum having each and everyone who feels the need of it playing police and wannabee mods with silly smiting, certainly not friendlier. If you don´t think the mods are doing their job properly I guess it´s more purposeful to tell them rather than to smite them? But you seem to have inside info not earlier available in this thread since you can declare it is just to deal with it and not have opinions about it. Thanks, then we know then what is decided. It´s fine for me as said earlier. Just hoped it was possible to have a sharing of opinions with logical arguments. My bad;)

I would be fine with the whole Karma system removed completly... but IF it is in play, I feel good karma without bad is totally unbalanced and a pointless tool, a waste of time. I like the idea of the PM's... I try to never say anything about someone I would not say to their face, so that means if you think someone acted in a manner befitting a smite, you have to explain yourself, at least expose yourself as thinking such, to them.
