New look is fine. I like it now. There was a couple of times today that I was a little confused to the way the board was looking. But now it looks great.

Not that I particularly like or dislike the look so-far, but I will agree with OC and others in that the actual forum and post area is way too narrow, and it may just be illusion but it seems the text in titles etc. is smaller? The background is nice, but it's always bugged my eyes when the background doesn't scroll with the foreground...not that a background like this would be able to, granted, but this is why I personally tend to prefer no fancy picture backgrounds... ...and wider text areas...and softer colors that don't eat my eyes or mask text or frames...

I do not know what the color scheme is supposed to be, but the colors I have at present are such that anything is highlighted in a kind of charcoal-brown dirty sooty black color that makes it impossible to read anything when highlighted.
Also, contrast beween colors on the current board layout is such that there is often no clear delineation between items.
The overall color scheme is very eye-searing after only a few minutes of looking at it.

Sizing..... who new? I just thought you guys were internet gods Guess I'll have to try and figure that out when it's fixed, along with just about everything else. As for the new look - to me it is harder to read/see, have to put my glasses on now. Other than that it looks nice ;D I did not vote because one way or the other it's all good to me. p.s. Paul I feel your pain! I'm glad everything worked out for you and thank you for all you do.

Even with my computer glasses on the font is harder to read, or maybe it's the background color. As several have noted, distinguishing quotes from new posting is not the clear and obvious it used to be.
I've been on forums that let the user pick their own font, colors, skin, or what have you. Is that possible with this setup?

I've tried to get used to, really I have, but I don't care for it. What was wrong with the original?

I think Paul just wants to rearrange his living room, so to speak. Hang out in the same space long enough and eventualy you start thinking about ho to change it. I rearrange my bedroom/living room probably once every 6-8 months. I get restless.

The light blue theme that was in effect about 14 hours ago was perfect. It was clear and easy to read posts.
Im not sure who is designing this but think goggle start page and the apple site. That's what you had with the light blue theme earlier. Less is more.
Everything about this new look is too cluttered. it would work for the SBG site but not for the forum. Its a nightmare to read . The colours are too similar to the background and the way the thread is shoved to the right doesn't help. The void to the right is pointless.

After spending about 5 minuets trying to look at other threads I've given up. I've had to disable the background images and zoom out to for a work around.
Its really hard to navigate.

Yeah the info on the left side is too big, making even short posts take up a lot of scrolling down. Good luck with it all Paul, and have fun.

I actually really love the current theme (the old parchment look with the faded swords to the right). I think it gives the forum a bit of flavor. Something about it reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics (hopefully I'm not the only ex gamer who'll catch the reference). Granted, it's the community and access to information that makes the forum what it is, but a fresh look never hurts .

For what it's worth, the lines between posts and everything else are way too subtle. I too think the sidebar thing ought to be scrapped. Everything I currently see over there did fine up top.
Overall, though, it's coming together pretty well. I did prefer the older look, but I'll get used to it.
Just like facebook. They change the homepage and people RAGE.
If only he could prepare all the changes, then implement the finished product all at once. Without us chiming in as he builds it. Must be nerve wracking, like several hundred backseat drivers.
Take your time, Paul. We're all behind you.

I don't want anyone to think that I'm bashing anyone for trying something new but I think that a very basic factor is being missed by some in regards to the change in design. That being we will be spending many hours a week reading in whatever format is decided on. There is a reason that the majority of forums look and work the same way. They stick to a formula that works, simplicity is key. Its going to start to grate on us after a while. Threads have a tendency to get elongated and cluttered by signatures and other crap as it is. Having an over complicated design only worsens this effect.
Let me play devils advocate for a second. From an outside perspective, could this format be seen as amateurish? Playing a little to much into the whole mythical ethos?

Yeah, I'm back in the engine room tweaking away - managed to get the sizing issue dealt with, and most other issues are being addressed (made everything a bit wider too, it was too cramped before). The right hand boxes will be expanded to have lots of info and links at your fingertips, and good for new members trying to navigate the place. Still very much a work in progress, and no doubt I'll hit some more pot holes in the road, but I think that when it is done it will be a big improvement over the old version. Feedback, constructive, destructive or plain old griping about how the times are a changing is welcome! ;D

The way I look at, Paul is this. This is your sand box, I just come over and play in it. Whatever you wanna do with the forum is good by me.

Looking better. It's less crowded now. The only beef I have is that big blocks of text are harder to track on the yellow background. Gives me new appreciation for people to use line breaks when typing novels. I liked it just fine before, but this is ok too.

Hi Paul,
If I'm being brutally honest, design wise, there is too much going on. The "admin and links" part in the top right corner inst necessary and disrupts the balance to the right. If they do expand further down then wont there be a tendency to mistakenly click on them when scrolling?
I think simplicity is key to any website.
Also is the "smite" button what I think it is? The ability to reduce karma? If it is I really don't think its necessary to have either. A lot of forum members are patting each other on the back as it is and the proverbial circle jerk can be sickening. This isn't going to be helped with a pointless "smite". Its childish and just fans flames.

Interestingly, if I resize my window, I can choose between the faded swords and the text "Sword-Buyers-Guide.com"
It's alright how it is now, but darker lines to break up post blocks and thread titles would be cool.
