Thanks gearloose p.s. monkey-feet Thanks a lot RicWilly ;D Thanks again utilityslave Thank you very much Brian ;D Yeah, genuine wild dog skin scabbard? I imagine the langets would make scabbard design tricky for this blade. I'll have to watch the movie again to see how he managed to carry it around without it falling out. Check it out for yourself web.archive.org/web/20080105022122/filmswords.com/conan/conan-sword-scabbards.htm

Man, BB, I just checked back in on the thread and that sword is BEAUTIFUL! and even that doesn't do it justice.

Man that's *interesting* that Albion actually use real dogs' skin for the scabbards. And with heads! Cesty. They do a good job though, offering all those options. I might have to make one of these big babies someday soon.

That's an interesting idea for a scabbard. The dogs mouth could be the opening with the blade extending down into the tail. Then the front feet go over your shoulder and connect to the back feet which go under your arm Thanks for the link Brian Odd that almost all of them have leather interiors though. Seems silly to get a scabbard that you can't actually store your sword in. Real coyote heads too... ick. Thanks Avery ;D Hey Brendan, I think if I were going to make scabbards like that I'd want to do them with wood cores and fake fur. Didn't he have a different dagger in the second (super crappy) movie?

I hope you'll take this as the compliment it is ment to be, Brian... but for the price they are asking for those scabbards, I would MUCH rather have some of your work. Without question.

Brendan: When are your blades going to see the light of day? ;D Well before I can make my crazy longsword atlantean, I have two blades I must make with which to pay back BB for his work. One is his Atlantean which you can see in it's current state of progress here: The other is for an as yet unannounced project he is workng on. It's special... I will also be making a new Fable-style version of the fathers sword which I will be doing to my own design, and not at all trying to immitate the old one. Using another set of BBs bronzes of course.

BTW I gotta say I'm super excited that I can now make a nice fuller for a full blade. It opens up all the Earlier type Oakeshott blades for me. It's a massive leap forward and opens up a lot of doors. I just have to figure out a good way to take off the rough marks from the machine bit. Still, I'm most of the way there now

I managed to sort out a flap wheel (Fan Grinder) for taking off the machine marks from my fullers. This is how she is looking now. Pretty rad I reckon I'm a happy camper.

Ok, so I'm a heretic. Sacreligious you might say. How can I fly in the face of everyones favourite movie swords and reshape them almost beyond recognition. Well I am thinking of a longsword version of the Atlantean for my one, as you saw a few pages back. Actually chuck in a shapely grip, with leather wrap (black perhaps) and I will be leaving the bronze in a polished state methinks. Well, I am thinking along similar lines for a new version of the sword of Nial, Conan's Father: But I wonder what you think? Would you? or would you strive to immitate the movieswords? And if I ever want to sell these swords do you think they would command as much as an immitation of the movie swords?

The changes you made to the grip on the Atlantean seem to make your blade shape fit better. Still looks a bit odd to me because of the langets but not bad. The new design for the sword of Nial looks quit good actually.
If you're making the swords for yourself, you should make whatever you want. There isn't any premium added to their cost for looking like the swords from the movie, the cost is just the time plus the materials. If you want to sell them, and someone likes them enough to buy them, the time and material cost doesn't go down just because they look a bit different. In other words... if something were being added to the cost because they look like specific swords then yes, swords that didn't look like those specific swords might not fetch the same price. However, since that's not the case, I don't see how it makes any difference.
The only reason I made the ones for myself look a lot like the swords from the move is because that was what I wanted. There's no reason to make something for yourself that isn't just what you want (which is why I did make some changes to my version). I say, make what you like and if you tire of them in the future, sell them to someone who likes what you like too.
Your Nial sword doesn't look like the movie sword with that blade shape and the longer grip, but it does look like a really great sword.

I'll admit--I never liked the way the fathers sword looked. Just not my cup o' tea. But lots of people love it, so I wouldn't ever bad-mouth it or anything like that. That being said, I'll venture to step on a couple toes and say that your edited version looks WAY WAY better than the original! By a factor of ten or so, in my opinion. So that's my reaction. I'm sure there are other people who would react in a similar way. I just don't know if those people would be the kind of people willing to buy a handmade Conan sword in the first place. The people who would want one are probably big Conan fans, and as such, are emotionally tied to the movie swords. I'm not a huge Conan fan, so I don't mind the changes, I yearn for them in fact. I do think a movie replica would be easier to sell, but I'd bet it would be more enjoyable to make the swords the way you want. I like your changes to the Atlantean more than the original as well. It's just not as striking a change as the fathers sword.
