I have a slight moral dilemma and thought it would be interested to see what your opinions are. I have already decided what I should do but I thought it would be interesting to see views of others.
So this is the dilemma:
I bought a sword form a well known sword vender about three months ago, paying on my credit card. however they did not have the particular sword in stock so they cancelled the credit card payment and said that once they had it in stock they would take payment and ship the sword out to me. They shipped the sword to be about 3 weeks ago. But when I checked my credit card I noticed that they had not charged me. I checked again a week later and still no charge. I checked again last night and still they have not charged me.
So would you contact the vender and tell them or would you just wait and see if they realise their error in the hope of getting a free sword?
As I said I have already decided what to do and I’m only asking out of curiosity about what others would do?

Well I'd personally contact the vendor about it, you should pay for what you ordered, no? Vendors in this industry can always use your support, well known or not

Well... first I would double check and make SURE I never paid... sometimes bills can look confusing. Then, if I was sure I have not been charged, I would contact the vendor and speak to them about it. It's the right thing to do, period.

i will answer that as a vendor and as a customer.
as a vendor: i would appreciate so much if a customer would be so honest at that point and for sure, this customer would be thanks in a way (i could afford), but make him happy in return. there is always ways to thanks customers.

as a buyer now : i would tell him for sure, because if he saw it,, and i do not pay,, it risk for me to be blocked from other vendors.or next time being refused for a good deal.
because i know that between vendors, when a buyer is untrustable or bad guy,, we tell each others.

I’ve defiantly not been charged it's not a small payment and would defiantly notice it on my card.

I second SH's take on it. I'd hate myself either way, but at least that way I'd know that I was doing the right thing. -Slayer

You know the saying, what goes around comes around...you also know that these guys are most likely not rolling in dough, so to speak, so they need every hard-earned shilling they can get; to deny them the funds, even after they shipped it to you in good faith (or simply forgot to charge you again since they refunded your money initially) is theft, plain and simple. They could've just taken the money and had you wait it out like a lot of companies WILL do.
Take the honorable route.

Perhaps there is a delay in billing and you will get charged later. Similar things have happened to me. I would contact the vendor in a reasonable time frame if you are not billed.
While it may, on some level, be tempting to "get a deal", I believe in karma and would wish honesty for myself from others. As such I owe that to others in return.
"Pay it forward."

I would say tell them, heck, maybe they'll even reward you or something for being honest.

As much as I would love a free sword, I would have to take the honest route myself.

Tell'em man....do unto others and all that. Plus, if it were me and I didn't tell them, everytime I looked at it I'd feel like I stole it.

The Japanese embodied their swords with the honor of passed ancestors. What honor would a stolen sword have everytime you picked it up?

No question about it! Tell them of the error and pay for the sword. The world we live in has changed - for the worst in my opinion. Everyone is looking for a freebie.
If you don't pay for it, how can they stay in business? They have to charge all of us more to cover your "free" sword.
Let's get back to the days of honesty and honor. Isn't that a large part of our passion for swords, the chivalry, honor, and pride that we associate with the knights of old?
I'm not implying you won't pay for it - quite the opposite from the tone of your post. - Well Met!

The only thing to do would be to contact the vendor.
There is the possibility that the charge was processed, but somehow slipped through the cracks (it has happened to me).
Then there is the more likely possibility that the vendor forgot to charge your account. From the original post, the account was charged and then the charge was canceled because of an out of stock situation.
From the tone of your post (as mentioned by others), I suspect I know how you handled the situation.

I would wait until next months credit card statement. Sometimes charges will be delayed for one reason or another. I've had it happen to me. If there still is no charge then call them. Don't e-mail. E-mails are sometimes answered by a different person/department then the accounting department. That may be where the problem lies. I'm not sure what the "dilema" is here. I hope you were never contemplating getting a free sword.

Exactly, what dilemma? Everyone had good advice though; mogur's right, check the statement- if it still looks as if you weren't charged, give'm a ring.
Or be without honor.

I would report it, since I value the traits of honesty and integrity, but I wouldn't go to much trouble for it, such as calling different departments etc.
