Thanks for the compliments and karma everyone Marc, Thanks for telling everyone about Rusted Root... I had a feeling you would recognize them. I have not had the pleasure of seeing them live. Fun music. Alvin, lo siento I uploaded a copy without music to see if it will work for you and others outside the country. I put it in the first post. Yes sir, I do study Gumdo. We do all sorts of crazy things...like dive rolls with the sword (and saya) then thrust, and cartwheels followed by cutting. They are fun...maybe not so "practical", but fun. I can't do the cartwheel/roundoff on my left side...it is sad. Re tatami...I cut my first mats yesterday...ugh, I did not do so well. I think I got two - maybe three - decent cuts? Tom, thanks for the compliments... mine is not really a great example...I've got no hangtime left after abusing my achilles for so long, but I would be happy to submit that clip. Thanks Kaminoheishi, I do study Gumdo, and now a few other arts. We have many stances in Gumdo. LOL! Thank you sir... not naive...I knew what I was signing up for....I am flattered AND I appreciate your candor...still embarassing though. Thanks again everyone Debbie

I think I got two - maybe three - decent cuts? It's a lot harder then it looks, MUCH harder then bottles. I cut my first mats at Tom's cutting party a little while ago... and it was an eye opener. I had, till that point, only cut bottles, pumpkins, watermellons, bamboo... and some other random stuff... but never mats. I learned just how bad my form is, how much more practice I need... but I'm glad I did it. The amts, especialy the mats rolled around bamboo, are a MUCH better idea of what cutting a limb or a human body would be like... a LOT more resistance, and makes edge alignment and speed that much more important. Did ya get any vid of the mats? I'd love to see.

For those that can't view the vid in other countries, maybe this copy without music or credits will work? It does, thank you. Solid technique. Very, very nice. Did I count seven onion rings and perhaps one small chip? -s.

Heh, I never thought it looked easy, so I actually kind of psyched myself out . I stood there looking at my first mat for what felt like five minutes before cutting. I have a few soaked mats left, but it has been raining here. I will post when I get those cut and some time to edit. Yes, different targets can teach us different things about form, grip, edge alignment, speed, tip placement.... I did learn that I like the stiffness of tatami better than the somewhat limp feel of beach mats. I won't be doing any cored mats anytime soon. I would need a sword I have more confidence in....in addition to needing A LOT more practice

Nice work, cool to see some Gumdo!
What sword are you using, by the way?

yeah tatami is an entirely different animal. you know, when your form and alignment are good tatami cuts pretty easy too. in fact it can be really surprising how once in a while it feel just like nothing at all but the next time your alignment is a little off and it feels like you're chopping wood with a dull ax.

Great cutting Deb, and I love that black outfit! I can imagine your neighbor watching you and saying to himself "OK, OK, I won't mow the lawn at night anymore"!

Yeah, thats it exactly! It gives GREAT feedback because when you cut it just right, it's like butter... but do it just a little bit wrong, and you know it right away. I just wish mats didn't cost so much... I'd be chopping em up all the time.

It is a Musashi Mokko/Santa Special that I bought a while ago. I did a review on it here, but it is in the old format. One of these days I should get to revising it. Now it is called the Takeo Katana (same catalog # SS807BK). It could use a sharpening Debbie

It could use a sharpening Ooo... that brings up a good question... how much cutting have you done with that sword... and have you noticed a loss in sharpness? I have not cut much with either of my Musasshi's.... I'm currious how much edge retention they have.

Hi Shadow, sorry I didn't answer earlier. I have cut maybe 25 gallon milk jugs and about 20 small bottles with it. I have not noticed much loss in the edge, it just did not come super sharp. My KI was much sharper, but for the most part, this one still gets the job done - if I do MY job right Sharpness, niku, and geometry are a trio of parameters that I really need to explore more. Debbie
