Did you ever gave a name to your sword, like the knights ( and samurai ) did in the old days; like "Whisperer"or "Joyeuse"?

I don't know I've always found this a bit corny and not in the least bit tacky...
However, I recently started calling my triplette rapier "pin point" for some odd reason ;D

Funny, mine has a first and last name; "it's sharp- don't touch the blade."

Maybe one day if I make my own, or blow a few thou on a custom piece. Until then, I wouldn't consider any of them unique enough or otherwise special enough to deserve a name.

Only 2 of mine have names: "not a Tiger" which is actually a Chen Tiger with a make over but I kept denying it to my ex and "zetsubou no shobu" which means Shobu of Despair ( a D Gurtin folded Shobu)named such as it took 2 1/2 years in the making and one time it seemed I had lost my money.

I am also of the opinion that nothing I yet own has the uniqueness/quality that would be required for me to give a name to.
If and when I get a sword of my own design made, it will have a name. But really, in all those fantasy settings where weapons have names, you've got to consider that maybe a dozen at most have names out of all the thousands out there in that world. Certainly nothing most of us own holds up to that kind of specialty.

It is not a matter of uniqueness or quality that gives you bonding with a certain sword or knife, but a feeling inside. I was not talking about swords used in fantasy storys like "the Lord of the rings", etc, but about real swords in history. In the Middle Ages it was not uncommon for a knight to give his sword a name.

My Japanese custom sashimi knife is called "Harusame" which means "Spring Rain". My katana is called it's factory model name "Oniyuri". My zweihander's name is "Zerstörung" which is German for Destruction.

i named a custom damascus knife i own "baldassare", which is italian for bravery. coincidentally, it saved my life once while i was being robbed at, you guessed it, knife-point. luckily i was a better knife fighter than he was.

I share the same opinion, If I have to give a Sword a name, that one have to be really special, for now, each one keep the same name model from the factory, Masahiro is "The Masahiro", the Ryumon is Ryumon, and the Chenness is 'Tenchi".
I build my own PC, it's have the ame IVY, but this is another story.....

I never really thought about naming my swords until I started buying more custom one of a kind swords. My first few under $300.00 swords were from MR and although didnt have a name they were known in the catalog as the "Eastern Barbarian,Windsong, archers short sword. The latest custom swords from Jody Samson or Mike Rader and even the Atrim I customized myself I gave names to probably because they were one of a kind. There is Draco, Xerxes, Talon, Arjuna and The black Pell.

Yeah...I guess I have to admit to doing this once. But that's a loooong story on another thread here on SBG Forum. Gennie on this post I assume! Yup, she's a beaut! The only sword I've ever named is one that flew out of the hilt one day (nasty cheapy one many years ago before I knew better). I called this one helicopter...! Oh, and maybe I've nicknamed the Cheness Kaze 'Tatami Killer'. But apart from that, I must admit I haven't, though I have an iaito that I train with that is getting enough character through repeated use to consider naming her...

i find that a name isnt really a thing just for "quality" or "unique" blades. but more something for a sword that is special to you, had something of a spirit to it, and a sign of respect for the weapon itself, and what it represents to you. My first live blade is my Masahiro i recently got, and that is something important to me. so, i named him Luminous. It sheds light on my way. i know that sounds pretty corny, but thats what it means to me. I find iaido a true path to betterment.
