Gents:
It's not my sword. A guy whose platoon guide I used to be back when he was a slick sleeve private was given this by his girlfriend's grandmother recently.
Here's what he has to say about it:
The pommel is a lion's head, with open jaw and red (glass? Ruby?) eyes. The hilt/handguard is solid, not pierced, with a smooth, broad, tapering stripe coming right out of the lion's mouth atop the handguard. The entire hilt/handguard is engraved & ornamented, with a smaller lion's head (mouth open) on the back of the hilt. On the outside of the hilt (where you see crossed cannon if some of those examples) are downward-pointing cossed sabers (cavalry, I'm thinking). On the inside, there's a little crest with the letters C and M superimposed on each other.
The Damascus blade is gilt for about 4 inches from the hilt and engraved, with "EISENHAUER DAMAST-STAHL" close to the hilt in the inside, below the "CM" crest. On the opposite side of the blade in that same place is the Imperial crest.
Also in the inside of the blade, maybe 1/4" from the hilt and obscured by the "CM" protion of the hilt, is another engraving on the blade - looks like two initials, maybe "F.F" or "R.R." in script.
The leather sword knot is still attached, with the finish of the leather strap mostly gone, although the leather itself still ain't too bad. The knot itself is gold-colored metal, as is the stitching on the leather strap.
Looks like a pipe back blade, and for the life of me "DAMAST" sure sounds like a German version of Damascus, and dang me if the blade doesn't look all Damscus-y. Or wootzy, or whatever.
He said this was the closest thing he's been able to find to it on the ol' intartub3z. www.wwiidaggers.com/26736.htm
Hints, clues, thoughts, suggestions?
