Hello all,
I have been working on remounting two swords, and so far all has gone well, but i have run into a bump.
I have built a new tsuka for a Dynasty forge Bushi class katana, and while fitting all the pieces together the Habaki broke. This was due to the way i built the tsuka to follow the curve of the blade.
What this did was push the habaki out of alignment and when i tried to correct it using a number of methods, it fell apart.
So guess my question is, two parted.
has anyone had alot of success buying habaki and fitting them on your own?
and who does affordable custom habaki?
Thanks all

Hello Shua,
You situation is indeed unfortunate. I for one dont care for the "one size fits all" idea of habaki. It will be a hit or miss process trying others to fit your blade, not to mention proper fit into the saya. Not impossible, but you will most likely need to not only work the replaceant habaki, but the saya as well. Keep in mind the normal process would be to make a habaki for the blade, then make the saya. Dong it the otherway around is again not impossible, but a bit more difficult. Must keep in mind as well that the new tsuka you have made will need to fit with the new habaki as well.... Many variables involved. Have you finished shaping/wraping the tsuka, or hopefully, is it still only roughed to shape? The later being preferable.
Habaki can be expensive thats for sure. To have one made to fit your blade and tsuka and saya will require more work of a very carefull manner. It can be done, but may run a bit more than you wish to spend.
I'd be willing to consider the project if your interested. Drop me a pm and we can talk shop. Good luck eitherway and let us know if you go the "one size fits all" route. I'd be curious how it works for you.
Take care,
Skip
