Shield / Shield Press construction how-toI have always enjoyed shields. So what else could I do? I started making my own. I found a lot of information on the internet and with this information at hand I started creating my own shields. I soon found out that one of the most important items in creating a good curve on a shield is having a good shield press. To some folks my shieldpress might seem a bit of overkill, but I like how the shields come out, very even, and a perfect curve (well, pretty close :>). I am not saying my procedures are any better or worse than anyone’s.. it is just how I ended up doing mine, and wish to share my steps with the group. If nothing else, you may pick up a hint or two if you are interested in building your own shields. The photo above shows my heater shield. This shield matches one of my surcoats The photo above shows one of my kite shields . Here are a couple of shots of my press. For more information, and how to I build these you can visit my web site. For the shields themselves: www.yeoldegaffers.com/project_shield.aspFor the shield press: www.yeoldegaffers.com/project_shieldpress.aspI will be more than happy to answer any questions. -gaffer

interersting. so you sandwich the shield in between the wood and let it sit so it bends it overnight or what? instantly? thats pretty cool. ive been thinking about how i would curve a shield i have plans for.

Hey Gaffer, that's great stuff...any of this for sale? I want that kite shield; the cross matches my surcoat perfectly!
Edited to add: +1 for the ultra-informative site on how to make your own. I don't have the tools or space but still, there are those who do and with your detailed instructions, they'll only be limited by their imagination. Stellar.

That's a beautiful shield, wiskyjac! How long did it take for you to make it? Do you mind telling me how much you paid for the materials, and where you acquired them?

Hey Jonathan, Glad your interested, It took me 2 weeks on and off.First I had to build the press{ yeoldgaffer's}.The supply's came from ,a fabric shop, Home Depot, and the Boss came from KOA. It's hard to say what it cost me for one shield, maybe $50.00 to60.00.But it was the FUN in making it that did it for me.It was time very well spent!!I have more on the go.I would like to try Celtic Patterns on one. Thanks for asking ,hope you try it. ;D

I really do want to try it some day, perhaps when I have more money to spend. I think that a celtic shield would be very unique and beautiful. Not many people make celtic shields. A norse shield would also be cool.
