It's going to be realy hard for you to cut much of anything under those conditions man... first off, you don't have any room in there to get a good swing going. Second, you can't do water filled bottles because they will splash all over your house. Cutting empties is a lot harder then water filled... and takes better edge alignment, tip speed and technique overall. I think you gotta find somewhere outdoors you can cut safely... it's going to be near impossable for you to do anything this way. I feel for ya...

unfortunately im surrounded by highway #1 on one side and more residential areas on every other side..id have to walk a couple miles to get to a park(which isnt so bad..unless your lazy and carrying 40 pounds of bottled water) but then im not sure i could get away with swinging a sword around...i mean if they dont want u skateboarding in parks...i dont see cops letting u cut stuff with katana in parks..did a lil recon yesterday as my mobile home park has several groves...but none of them are really concealed to neighboring homes...and the last thing i want is jail time for minding my own buisness..but i can understand how alot of ppl may be disturbed or frightened by someone cutting up things near their house....so still presently SOL...

theres got to be a park or something nearby right? You're gonna take a sword into a park, with kids and other people around? Good way to end up in jail IMHO!

You'd think so, Mogur, and so would I. Except about ten years ago I saw a fellow teaching some sort of martial arts giving a demonstration in a public park to a group I was with. His class was composed of young teenagers. At one point he placed a watermelon on the abdomen of a student laying on his back and cut it in half with a katana. At the time I didn't think much of it but knowing what I know now it seems fool hardy at the very least, imo. I'm pretty sure he didn't have any special permits or anything to have weapons in the park. It was fairly crowded that day and it lasted an hour or so. No one intervened or seemed to think much of it except for curiosity.

I live in the most anti-anything scary capitol of the world (aka SF bay area) and I can actually use the local parks to cut with if I wish. As long as you show proper restraint and set up a clear zone, most park rangers don´t mind. In fact most are down right curious. You do draw a crowd so it helps to have somebody keep an eye out. It also helps if your giving a safety lecture and history lesson while doing such. Actually quite fun and I have had a few parks ask when I would come back . As for cutting in a small area...yeah your SoL.

yeah well needless to say rural south carolina is slightyly different that San Fran...i got some jello filled bottles forming in the refridgerator atm so when those cool up ill make a vid or two of my first attempts on bottles..park rangers did give me an idea ..i could go to a larger state park where there will be acres of solitude though that will take a veritable road trip

Best way to appease park rangers is to show you are a responsible person with full knowledge of safety. Bring a length of rope to mark off the cutting area. Have a friend keep an eye out with a safety word in mind for you to stop if anyone comes withing that area...and you want extra space so there is some lead time in the warning. Only the person cutting should be in the marked off area. Have your friend with a first aid kit and cell phone on hand and visible. Remove labels of any alcoholic drink containers or cover them up as needed. That isn´t a safety issue but more of an image issue. You don´t want to mix the image of cutting and drinking to anyone...and it makes it more family friendly. Talk with people that come and stop to watch. Reiterate the safety precautions first. When most park rangers see you taking these steps they generally don´t have much issue with you cutting at the park. Some parks may ask that you get certain permits for exhibition though...and if that is the case, just follow their direction.

busy day yesterday....so this will be an extension of previous posts....wanted to thank everyone for advice...extra props to Cold napalm for laying out a good plan...went to park earlier today...no rangers to speak of nor any office where one might reside....i got some practice in ..but still not getting any complete cuts so i wont be posting my failures...saving plenty of bottles and milk jugs so prolly wont be cutting any more beer boxes..but found a great spot none the less..heavily wooded with rock formations throughout...and very small chance of running into to anyone and very easy to just go off trail and be completely isolated..i will post some pics of the area later
