I owned that axe at one time and sold it. It was a good axe I just needed a bit of cash at the time. Its worth having, but if you want something a little less expensive thats still as good, give this a look. /index.cgi?board=otherweaponreviews&action=display&thread=9227

I have a pair of A&A Nordland axes I got when they were the "Spotlight Item of the Month." I like them very much, though I didn't know the edges weren't hardened. They sharpened up nicely, but I haven't used them yet. Now you have me worried and intent on putting one through its paces.

The nordland throws well, at least the one I had did. As for the soft edge, its an easy fix if you roll the edge or chip it a bit. Just a little work with the file and good as new. 'course I'm not telling Mike anything he doesn't already know.... or you guys either for that matter. If I remember correctly the pacings on it were 5 1/2 back from the target... that coincides with the handle length anyway.

I emailed A&A directly and asked about the issue of the hardened edge, and Craig said that the addition of a hardened edge would be and extra $35 (please excuse the listing of $30 in my original post), bringing the total cost $110 with shipping. I found out about the lack of a hardened edge from others on myarmoury.com. Those who had it without the hardened edge said it performed decent, but that if it had one it would be spectacular. Mike - I'd love to hear how the standard models perform without the hardened edge. Maybe a formal review is in order...? Interesting side note; I noticed the guys from Hurstwic use a Nordland in their Viking combat demonstrations. I'll have to catch one of their shows at Higgins Armory and ask them about it. There doing one on my birthday.

Having had an appreciation for the bearded axe-design for years, I bought one when they were the "Item of the month" as well. This was bought mainly as a lightweight camping axe with an additional 'viking cool'- factor as a bonus, lol.
The head is cast, and the standard version has a fairly soft temper. Sorry for not being able to offer any RC numbers here. My swag would be in the low-to mid 40's. The angle of the sharpening is way too steep to be of any use as a working axe. OK for splitting dry firewood, but felling even a small tree is a chore. An hour or so with a flat mill file did improve things quite a bit, but a hardened edge would probably make a noticeable difference.
The haft is quite slender for adult hands, but not too bad. Being made of straight-grained hickory, it's pretty much bombproof.
A neat little axe, overall. Go get one.

Well... I got one. My mom asked me what wanted for my birthday, and I needed an axe for an upcoming camping trip, so there you have it. I opted for the hardened edge as well. I've had it for a little over a month now and I really like it. I'm glad I went for the hardened edge. I've been beating the tar out of this thing and the edge has held up phenomenally. I'm thinking about throwing a review together. If anyone else has the stock version, I was thinking maybe a joint effort could be interesting to compare and contrast the stock edge with the hardened. What do you all think??

I would like to see a review; the joint effort seems like a great idea!

Honestly Josh, I'd just like to see your' review of the axe. If youd like some suggestions on what to focus on when reviewing an axe, shoot me a p.m. 'course, if not, just go with the ol' gut and show anything you think will help. Can't really go wrong there.
