After seeing gladii/spathas in so many books, I just got to have one. Thing is, I haven't seen any functional (and historically accurate) ones for under $150. Do you have any to recommend?

Hmmm, there's a lot of great pieces out there, but not too many in that price range. I took a look through KoA's offerings, and found mostly Deepeeka offerings. Most likely not battle-ready, as per Rick's review: /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=5456&page=1#85704 There is a Roman Cavalry sword (spatha) that claims to be a carbon steel blade, but is not listed as battle ready, nor is a manufacturer listed. You could email them and find out who makes it. It's a fairly good looking sword. www.kultofathena.com/product~item~8852~name~Roman+Cavalry+Sword.htmFor about 160 you could get the Valiant Armoury Praetorian gladius, which is not reviewed here but looks okay for the money. Not historically accurate. Here's the link: www.kultofathena.com/product~item~VA54105~name~Valiant+Armoury+Praetorian+Roman+Gladius.htmStrongblade also makes a gladius they call the Praetorian, though it is about 175. It's reviewed here by Serge, and got quite favorable scores. Here's the review: /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=7250&page=1#112658 Out of those, I'd go with the Strongblade. If you get a promising reply from KOA about that spatha, it may at least be worth a shot. Edit: For some reason, the KOA links arent working, yet I double checked them and they're right. Hopefully they work now. Edit 2: Still not working with the tags. Just copy/paste them, I suppose. Weird.

The closest gladii to your pricerange I would get is one of the Gen 2 ones. If you get em from Arms of Valor with the discount on Gen 2 swords for SBG members, it amounts to about 180. I wanted a Gen 2 Wasp Waisted... but Ric Willy snaged it before I could. Damn you RicWilly!!!

Ooh, I had no idea the Gen2's were that cheap.
My vote goes to them, then.

Yeah... if Arms of Valor had the Wasp Wasted in stock right now, I'd probably grab it.

Yeah... Kult of Athena is unique in the industry in that they ahve a HUGE storefront where they keep a lot of stuff in stock, instead of just drop-shipping everything. I would LOVE to step inside their show someday... I'd be a kid in a candy store. ;D

I'm quite fond of this model, tho I did have to fix the grip. It's not exactly historical in form but is in spirit, I think anyway.

Apparently I was wrong when I said no one had reviewed the VA Praetorian, as Paul has made two videos testing it on water bottles, as well as pool noodles and tatami mats. I didn't see it in the Review Index so it's probably posted only on the main site. Here's the videos:
Edit: Damn, embedding wont work. How'd you guys get it to work in other threads? Weird.

CASI used to make a couple of Spathae.... they don't anymore.... darn shame, as the one I got is pretty decent.... For a gladius that's both historically accurate and functional and under $150? That is a tall order.... but check this one out: legvi.tripod.com/armamentarium/id189.htmlIt looks very historically correct, and that scabbard is awesome for the price. How functional is it? I don't know. It's made by reenactors for reenactors, but that doesn't mean it won't be a good cutter.... Now, go here: www.finditarmory.com . Go to "Product Overview", then to "Weapons", then to "Roman Gladius w/Scabbard and Baldric" (item number SDK1171). This also looks very accurate. Again, I don't know how it will perform. But for $85 bucks? Might be worth it to find out....

Wow, I wasn't expecting that many replies... Sure it sounds like a tall order, but I've seen Cinquedeas for that price and they're like 10 times rarer than Gladii. Sounds like the Gen. 2 is the best bet.
P.S. What I mean by "historically accurate" is having no ricasso (the V-shaped thing on the blade towards the guard).
