Hello everybody,
I'd like to know what you all think about blackened (or left black from forge) or blued fullers on european medieval or late-medieval swords? Esthetically speaking. Lutel and Angus Trim have a few on their lineups for example.
And cold-blueing the fullers: could it affect the solidity/integrity of the blade in any way? Because the process of cold blueing is attacking the steel in a way, so...any risks involved?
I find fullers with blackened/blued finish on certain swords pretty nice and was thinking maybe giving it a shot on one of my swords...

Bluing as far as I understand does not affect the structural integrity of the blade. My wraith is blued from hilt to tip and it has no structural instabilities.

I do it on all mine, cos Its too hard to polish them out. Go for it. Theres' no drawbacks. Do you know about degreasing. It won't work if it's not well degreased. You can get kits for Perma blue which have the degreasing solution too. Once it's done, neutralise it with water, sand back the overlap/ spillage with some 320 or 400, then oil it up straight away. Reoil it the next day too.

Thanks for the advices, guys! I guess that you, Brenno, like the look of blued fullers! I saw a few of your swords with them and agree, it's very nice! (By the way, keep up the good work! It keeps getting better! Congratulations on your art) Yes, thanks, I know about degreasing, I do it with rubbing alcohol 70%. I was thinking blueing the fullers of my valiant/AT practical longsword...hence the questions...
Anybody else have comments about the look of blued fullers on a euro medieval sword?

I like the idea.
I actually once thought about having a sword sprayed with "Duracoat" to change the color of it but I think that'd probably make it look like a toy, which is definitely not a safe look to go with or desirable.
The two-toned blade would look good! Go for it. Just make sure to post us pics!!

I am all for blued fullers, they look unique if done nicely. I found that I like the blue to be a little inconsistant (different hues) for a bit of character - because perfect bluing just looks like someone took a black Sharpie in the fuller IMHO.
Now, there is something else that might interest you. Someone posted a trick here somewhere where you can take tissue paper and lemon juice and get a cool pattern welded effect in your fullers. I tried it with success once (took me three days), but it would be better if someone could find it and link the instructions here rather than trying to explain what to do. It's really simple and the effect is way cooler than plain old bluing.

Littlejon: sure thing, I'll try and post some pics once I'm done... Odingaard: thanks or the advice and alternative option to blueing...I'll look into that. Meanwhile, if you happen to find it first, please post the link (and a picture of your take on that trick would be nice also). I'm still juggling with the options here, but I really like the look of such fullers on Atrims and Lutels...(by the way, when do we expect a review of your 1501? )

Found the trick for the fullers Odingaard was writing about, it was done by Maz on a Windlass classic medieval:

Interesting indeed.
