Hey all,
I recently received a new cheap katana from ebay that I hope to have the time to review soon (footage is being edited at the moment) but I'd like to share a cleaning tip that I thought worked really well after attacking some of the plants around my home.
I don't have anything really fancy... some sewing machine oil and innox (like WD-40 I think), so when using toilet paper and cloth didn't work to get the green plant gunk off the blade I felt a little stuck for options till I remembered that paper cleans glass really well. I used some regular white A4 printer paper folded over a few times with some innox and it worked like a charm! I could apply some serious pressure to the blade without any scratches at all and the sap came right off!
Maybe this thread can be a place where people post their cleaning tips too?

Glass cleaner like Windex works well for getting sap and other sticky stuff off too(after a hard days battle with cactus ninja), be sure to re oil afterwards tho as it cleans the oil of real well too.

I probably deserve to be executed by 300 members of a firing squad but...I use water Before shootermike and other fanatics start loading up, I DO quickly apply a generous amount of oil after the initial cleaning. The water bath is only to take of tree sap that builds up and I don't want to waste my precious oil on that ;D Ok, hunt me down And NO I don't do this to my ritter in case you're about to ask ;D

webos-haminados, Thanks for your feedback... I wonder if maybe the plants at my house are just genetic weaklings then?

Glass cleaner like Windex works well for getting sap and other sticky stuff off too(after a hard days battle with cactus ninja), be sure to re oil afterwards tho as it cleans the oil of real well too. But make sure it does not have ammonia in the glass cleaner, it does not do well on carbon steel. If it has vinegar, it is OK, just spray WD40 as soon as possible to get the vinegar off. Usually the best way to get the plant gumm off is by WD40, or what works best is carburetor cleaner, it will take grease, junk, just about anything off and will not hurt or stain the blade. I hope this helps.

I use lighter fluid, which is just Naphtha, it will take just about anything off the blade with no staining. A big bottle which is $4 will last for a year.

Neither one of those (Isopropyl Alcohol or Ethylene Glycol) will hurt steel. Though oiling the sword immediately after cleaning is necessary to prevent rust from forming.
I should point out that Isopropyl Alcohol is hygroscopic (it will pull moisture out of the air) and Ethylene Glycol is water soluble not to mention Windex contains water so be careful not to allow any of them to get under the handle (tsuka, hilt) where they would hold moisture and cause rust to form.
