I purchased Dan's "Historical Excalibur" that he had posted up in the classifieds and I've been thinking hard about my options for customization.
In his review, he cited the poor wrapping job for the leather of the grip and ill-fitting sheath. The latter doesn't bother me so much but the leather wrap is a concern. I'll get to sheath later on down the road.
It looks like the wood underneath the wrap is pretty decent, though I've not personally inspected it as the sword is currently in transit and I've not received it.
I've been thinking about possibly using boiled linseed oil and finishing wax if the wood is decent. I've used both for refinishing rifle stocks and have some experience using both products. I don't think BLO will be slippery, but to be on the safe side I might wrap something (like adhesive grip tape strips) to enable a better purchase on the grips.
Thoughts? What would you do if you purchased this sword?

PS, forgot... This is entirely dependant upon the type of wood used for the grips! If its crappy cork wood I'm SOL and will have to wrap it entirely.

Chances are it's macassar ebony, 4 of the 5 windlass grips I've re-covered have been. The 5th was plastic. Your idea of refinishing the wood sounds good to me, only I'd steer away from the grip tape. The shape of the handle ought to give you a pretty secure grip.

Macassar Ebony, really? That'll actually turn out pretty nice! I'm tempted to get a really dark walnut stain and use that before finishing it up.
I'll go buy a pair of decent gloves to be on the safe side. I just got done watching Niterazor's video where he cuts his hand open and gloves seem like a good investment, and should provide a good grip too.
