And, I may not be able to be like you (awesome), but I CAN (and WILL) try to rival your sword collection! ;D ;D ;D lol, it'll be pretty hard though, with all those bladed beauties you have laying around... Quality, not quantity, Slayer... Marc has some VERY nice swords.

Excellent review Poo! I have been toying with buying a DSA since I saw Paul's review on the knightly and this helps solidify them in my mind as a devastatingly durable sowrd manufacturer. As for everyone who commented on your 6/5 rating, I'm sure they were trying to be helpful. I've never seen anyone outright bash someone on this forum without getting jumped by a buttload of people. On the other hand, we all have a particular affinity for our first sword even it was crap. This is his first sword and I'm sure it is magical to him Cheers and +1 Jim

Hey Musicalpoo,
I really like the pics, they really do the sword justice.
As a side note, I've handled this blade, and it handled like a two handed-rapier. It's pretty light, and I'm not a particularly strong guy. so if someone thinks this one is heavy, well, he should hit the weights.

With all due respect... what have you been somking, and where can I get it? I agree the Gothic two handed sword is one of DSA's lighter, more lively blades... but a two handed rapier? Someone needs to lift weights if they think its too heavy? Uh... no. Mine comes in about 3lbs 10oz... and because of the signifgant profile taper it handles pretty well. HOWEVER... there are a whole slew of Atrim blades with the same length that weigh a pound or so less. The Valiant Armoury Longsword is about the same size as the Gothic two handed and weighs MORE then a pound less. The CAS/Hanwei Tinker Longsword, same size, 12 oz less... ...every little bit of weight in a sword matters, just like with a sportscar. I LOVE my Gothic Two Handed sword... it's very attractive, durable, feels strong and solid in hand... but it *IS* heavy... and I'm a big guy with a pretty solid bench press, so I don't think needing to go lift weights is my problem.

Shadowhowler, I didn't mean to offend you with my post, and I apologize if I did. It's just that I have the feeling that a lot of people have been bashing on Musicalpoo's review for no reason when chances are that they were never in contact with the said blade. Someone that has never handled this blade and that comes and reads all these comments is going to think that we're dealing with a sharpened crowbar, when it's absolutely not true. As for the need to save every ounce possible when making a sword, I do agree it's important, but it's just one consideration among many, just like with sport cars. Federico p.s.: for the smoking part, I'm sorry, but I'm not sharing

p.s.: for the smoking part, I'm sorry, but I'm not sharing Greedy bastered! No worries man, I wasn't offended at all... I just thought your comparasion of the Gothic Two handed sword to a rapier was WAY off, and the 'need to lift weights' idea was way off as well. I also like to make sure people are speaking from experince when they talk about things, and not just blubbering on about something because they read it somewhere. I HAVE the DSA Gothic Two Handed sword... and it's one of my favorites. I recently sold like 8 production swords... but I kept the Gothic Two handed... so that should say something about how I feel about it. ;D While it's NOT a sharp crowbar as some mat suggest... it *IS* a bit heavier then it needs to be for the type of sword it is. There are other swords of the same size that are up to and over a pound lighter... and that lighter weight translates to quicking movement, and less strain on the wrists arms and body, so longer use of the blade becomes easier. Thats why I would question a rating of 5 or even 4 for handling of the Gothic Two Handed sword... but I would not question durability of 4-5... cuz it's TOUGH.

it's all personal preference. This is my first sword, and it handles much better than I expected, so for a kid with no expectations, this is a damn good sword. However, for those who have Atrims, Albions, or some other very fancy long sword, this would be considered rather heavy. But I can rather effectively use it with an axe in my left hand fredrico, didn't you learn how to share in kindergarten!

federico: friend, have you ever handled a rapier? Also what kind of rapier are you talking about? Sword rapier, standard rapier also often mistaken for the small sword or a fencing rapier? A rapier handles like a rapier and a sword handles like a sword.

Someone that has never handled this blade and that comes and reads all these comments is going to think that we're dealing with a sharpened crowbar, when it's absolutely not true. Well sharpened crowbar might be pushing it...it's not sharp. But kidding aside, countering a silly assertion like the DSA two handed gothic is a sharpened crowbar (because really the basic stats says it' not THAT bad...just a bit heavy) with an equally or possible even more silly assertion that it handles like a two handed rapier doesn't work. It just makes both people look silly...and neither one right. Yes it's one aspect...but it's one aspect that improves EVERY other aspect. You can improve the brakes and tires...but without better suspension to hold the tires to the road, this could end up making the car slower. You can improve the suspension, but without more power, you can make it too stiff and so once again too slow in the turns. Reduced weight ALWAYS makes it better. In the sword world, this isn't quite the same because reduced wieght comes with other trade offs...where in a sports car reduced weight is always a good thing. But since we are on the car analogy, making a properly made sport car go faster is easier and cheaper then getting a Hummer and making it into a gt1 car. You can with some minor cutlery skills, make the valiant atrim line/ hanwei tinkerline/ gen 2 swords into something that closely rivals the top name swords. Just like you can get a mitsu EVO and make it compete with a lambo pretty easily. But the DSA...well with big fittings and a completely wrong blade, that's like getting a Hummer and making it compete with a lambo. You can do it...but why?!? Since we are going on this TV quote thing...sharing is caring muhahahaha .

Hey man, it was your first sword, understandably you were excited that it was NOT, in fact, a piece of CRAP. I was excited with my first sword, it was a real POS, broke on the second swing right at the tang weld- the hollow handle cracked along the grain as well. Not the best 12 bucks I ever spent but hey, lessons learned, right?
Everyone's already addressed the reviews, be unbiased, yada yada- glad your first sword suits you- now you've taken the first hit, the plunge will surely follow. Welcome aboard!

Agreed, my comment was indeed pushing it. However, I think we can agree on a middle ground between rapier and crowbar! Bloodwraith, I did handle one at an arms fair. I don't know who the maker was though, as it was kind of old. It was a flamberge bladed rapier, kind of like this one www.aurorahistoryboutique.com/products/R000181_L.jpg , but not that one model exactly. I'll see if the guy still has it at the next arms fair. The only other one I've handled was a cheap chinese stainless knock off, so that doesn't tell much. However, those were definitely not smallswords. AH, and I did fence with a buddy and his fencing foils! (just for kicks though, I don't fence) You're right though, those blades did feel like they had 0 mass, I exaggerated. As for the car analogy, I knew someone was gonna go there ;D I can't fully agree on the weight issue. Take a rear wheel drive sportscar for instance. If the car has a hefty amount of power, a lot of it will go to waste on the initial acceleration as it won't grip. You'll end up with a smoke show. Even great aerodynamics won't help you until you reach a certain speed. Anyways, this is out of topic, and I need to get some work done. Federico

Nice pictures Poo. And I liked the review. This thread addresses a lot of my thoughts and concerns about the reviews on this site. I agree with Cold Napalm and shadowhowler (page1) that when you do use the number system it does not help the community to throw out 4's and 5's when it is plainly not deserved. But! I also understand that having that new sword, especially your first, excites and it's hard to be objective. Fortunately by stating that in the review the reader can filter what he reads So basically I guess it comes down to "reader beware". Understand where the writer is coming from and judge for yourself. Not necessarily the best way to review something, but I look at it as if a friend were talking about his new toy and telling me what he likes and dislikes about it. I take from that what I can. There's always something to be learned from someone's opinion. I also don't quite agree with the number system and prefer Daniel's method. Also, Marc. Great write up! Experience is the biggest issue for me. I have a sword that I could post a review about. But I think my experience is too limited to do it justice. Is the handling good? Compared to what? I only have 2 swords. If one better than the other does that mean it is good? Or do they both suck? I have never handled a Albion or Atrim (yet!). Should this sub-$300 sword's handling be compared to them? If so then I can't do a review. Should it be reviewed on it's own merit? Then what basis of comparision does the reader have? I may think it's a great handling weapon but someone with more experience and knowledge may roll his eyes at it That's why I am so glad we have a collection of great people here. I trust the review team's opinions. Good choices there Paul! And, of course many of the other people that post here are great sources of knowledge. But my own reviews? I don't think I know enough yet to subject all of you to them ;D
