Hello again,
I bought this Hanwei Viking Short Axe from a store in Pocatello, Idaho for about $79, but it's online for about $60. The first thing I will say, is that this axe looks WAY better in person than it does online. The head looks all fancy and stuff, it is antiqued, so the finish is very cool. The sharpened edge (not really that sharp, my mom approved of it) is very shiny
Obviously an axe isn't supposed to feel well balanced in the hand, but this axe doesn't do to bad if you hold it right. I liked this axe because I thought of it as a "hand an a half" axe, It can be a 1 hander, or a 2 hander. The wooden handle (or shaft, but being thirteen I prefer not to use that word in fear of not being taken seriously) looks amazing, it has an almost greenish-tinge to it. Also it fits surprisingly well in my hand without compromising structural integrity. Admittedly, the head does slide down the handle, but I have no worries of it flying off the end (since it's taken me a good deal of effort to push up to where it is).
the Stats!
overall length.............................25 inches (the blade sticks up a bit)
shaft length...............................23 inches
shaft width................................1 inch
shaft thickness..........................1/2 inch
blade length..............................6 inches
head width (back to blade).......6 1/2 inches
weight...................................... 2 pounds-ish
and here are the pics!
EPIC BOX OF AWESOMENESS!
Axe head with TINY SHEATH OF AWESOMENESS!
axe head...OF AWESOMENESS!
rather pronounced beard OF AWESOMENESS!
back part of head, here you can see that the shaft is quite a bit more wide than thick, which makes sense, and makes it fit in your hand nicely.
gleaming blade OF AWESOMENESS!
shot with the my fire-proof lizards
comparison shot with my beloved Gothic sword (i love it so much)
lone shot on the bench
the axe against a chopped up branch that fell in our back yard (which I chopped with a home depot-axe, not this one)
other side
axe through my belt loop
and finally the axe in the railroad tie
So, as you can see by now, this is a pretty pretty axe And, like I said, it looks way better in person than online. I did take a few swings at that wood pile, and it did fine. Though I didn't do anything to push it.
ratings!
historical accuracy.....5/5
fit and finish..............5/5
handling....................2/5 (it's an axe!)
structural integrity....4.5/5
value for money........6/5
my rating for structural integrity was due to the fact that it can slip off the bottom, there's no way it's coming off the top though.
and my rating on value for money, for only $60 bucks, it's brilliant axe.
where to buy:
for some reason, copy and pasting doesn't work this this link, so I'm just going to give u this link. it's the KoA axes page. This particular axe is in the middle row, 8 rows down.
