Just a random thought/observation to all...
One thing to note. When designing/making a longsword with hand protection, keep in mind to have the sides with enough clearance to get into a proper Ochs position without cramping the wrists up against the guard.
This isn't so much of a concern with a saber, as it might not be used with a German or Italian longsword tradition. But a double-edged sword would beg for that usage.

I was thinking about that too Mike. In all likelyness, I would probably have to settle for just a knuckle guard and siderings.

You really like big swords that couldn't really be functional, ha?

maybe not functional for a liddle wimpy person. i have a 60 inch claymore/greatsword that i made in shop class back in my high school days, its just a 4 inch wide piece of bar stock, crappy metal for swords, its not forged or tempered or anything like that. it doesnt even have and handle, wrapped or otherwise, just a long fat tang. 2 ft 8 inches of blade and the rest is ricasso and handle. not sure what it weighs but its not bad. i can swing it around fine. i used to split 5 inch thick logs a foot long clean in half with it, ive bent the blade a couple of times but bent it right back. i have a yard and pool business and we frequently get calls to remove bushes and trees. i use an axe. i also just recently quit a job as a lumberjack. ive swung an axe for many many hours. after about 60-100 swings your hand hurts if you straighten it out of your grip. when that happens and you keep going, eventually you get an "iron grip" what i call it anyways. my axe i swing weighs at least 4-5 maybe 6 lbs. haha. you people who complain of weight just need to do some hard labor. work out and semprini. haha!

hahaha, i dont even really have "big" muscles, just endurance in my muscles. muscles dont have to be "big" to be strong. my brother is 5 ft 9 and maybe 155 lbs. i watch him do reps of weight that guys my size 6 ft 3 190 lbs + are MAXING out on. he is sitting there repping it. you people have a problem, swinging swords is similar in the way of lifting weights, if you dont think you can lift the weight, you aint going to lift it. if you believe you can lift it you will succeed in lifting the weight. same thing goes with swords and the weight of swords, if you dont think you can weild it, dont even try, you wont be able to. human muscles can lift a LOT more weight than you think you can. its all in your head. i dont have huge muscles, i just believe in myself. whatever any of you think of me, i do not care. if you think im stupid and ignorant, thats your right, its your opinion. but i know what i can do and what i cant. i dont train in something that i dont think i can do. what is the point? you people obviously do not think you can swing something that big around confidently. i have done it for over 6 years, slowly increasing weight. i even have a broken dominant hand. i can still swing and fight effeciently. you people naysaying are just a bunch of 13 yr old kids that havnt dropped your junk yet. if your having problems using something, keep training with it. dont give up. ive had people my WHOLE life try to disprove me about my weapon and my stratagies. i will not falter. my girlfriend is 5 ft 2 and she uses a claymore. grow some balls people.
