I would like to see people come up with something really novel and original. How about hand protection for a two-handed sword.
You guys might want to look at basket hilt sword and rapiers for some ideas. You might also want to look at a batleth designs which offer some hand protection.
My idea is a bastardsword with siderings and a long knuckle guard similar to what you might find on a cutlass.

thi s just for kicks or are you trying to macgyver something for sca? I think the siderings and knuckle guard make sense... a full basket wouldn't really work that well and might mess up the balance.

No, just for kicks. You might be able to offset the weight of the basket by eliminating the pommol or a longer handle Mandorallin, that two handed saber you posted is just amazing. I wonder if he based it on any historical piece. I would consider buying a blunt with that guard design.

Bill, I remember seeing on the ARMA website a picture of John Clements holding a massive 2 handed sabre, that beleive it or not had a big ass D guard covering the whole front of the 2 hand grip.

That looks like it would have made a cool movie back in the 70's. I don't know if they can pull it off today.

Alas, it was Bloodwraith that posted the link, not I. I agree though, its a damn sexy piece. Hmm... how about a mortuary style hilt? heh..

Yeah, Luka, not bad at all. A knuckle guard should do it.

This is what I came up with. The handle is slightly curved to fit in the palm better. And I like HR's idea of the "Clamshell claymore" that would be cool.

Thanks to Brian for posting that sketch and Mike for putting up those links. I hope more people post links and sketches.

Those are very elegant and wicked looking. Looking at Christian Fletcher's work is a joy.

I tried to design a basket hilted longsword. I think it's promising but needs work.

Nice Johnerickson. I'm thinking longer guard. Perhaps smaller pommol to maintain balance. I think we might need that top part of the crossguard too. The fin on the top part of the blade might bring the balance too much forward. This is something to think about.
