I've come across that site in the search for chainmail also... I dunno anything about them tho. I decided I want a real good set of riveted mail... so its going to be awhile before I can afford anything.

All of the $99.00 chain maille shirts and coifs are JUNK. They are mild butted construction, meaning that if you sneeze wearing it, you are going to lose rings. I had one of these years ago, and everytime I wore it, I'd lose 4-5 rings - mainly in the armpits, but sometimes at the shoulders and neckline.
If you have to go butted to save coin, then go for medium spring steel; which has a little bit more strength. You will still lose rings, but not at the frequency that you lose them with the mild steel. Of course, if you repair chain maille for a hobby - well, to each their own...
My advice is save your coins and get a riveted steel, riveted alumnium, or stainless welded ring mesh (good for LARP or general cutting safety).

Yea riveted mail is great and expensive but since I figured this is supposed to be an under $300.00 site the butted mail was a good price.i have had a butted steel shirt and coif from MR Windlass for about 10 years now and havent lost a ring.I'm not going into battle i'm only wearing it to the ren fest.Like I also said I dont know about this company but with the way the economy is now a real steel $97.00 mail shirt and $19 for a coif is a good start if you dont have one.Again I'm not going into battle I just have more fun at the renfest in garb and this could give someone a chance to have one for less than the $299.00 even Museum reps charges for butted mail and coif together.Hell I didnt say everybody should buy one all i said was take a look.

I bought a riveted steel hauberk from von Von Sussen Enterprises on eBay for around $200 a couple years back - I don't think his prices have increased much. It's been a good set, though a bit to heavy for wear at Ye Old Ren Faire.
For non-WMA activities or cutting exercises, I wear welded stainless from RingMesh.com - totally inauthentic, but very light and effective protection; stuff is made to deflect shark bites and such. ;D

Everybody to their own.

I watch their auctions quite a bit... hopping for a deal like that. The best I've seen of late from them as far as rivited mail as about 379... and thats for a small peice that would never fit me. In fact, I e-mailed them and they don't really offer anything that would fit my fat ass. Time to hit the gym neh? That Ringmesh stuff looks awesome. Yeh, not historical in any sesne... but it looks tough as hell and seamless in how it's put together. I like that stuff... if only I could afford it.

Ish, that sucks about Von Sussen. He used to have really good prices on riveted. Now, I won my RingMesh hauberk new for $140 in 2007 on eBay. It is my favorite piece of armor and well worth the cost - I would have gladly paid full price after having worn it. It's literally like putting on a t-shirt and you never loose rings. Not to mention, its got a lifetime warranty. Mine is an XLarge half-sleeve tunic and weighs maybe 5-6 lbs tops. I have a Carhartt jacket that weighs more. Perfect for faires, cutting exercises, or if you want to fill the gaps in your plate without donning a 37lb hauberk. Here is mine at Dragon*Con this last year:

Does anyone here know exactly what the sizing section of the ringmesh website is referring to in the "torso circumference" section of the graph? Does it want the circumference at the gut, hips, upper chest, shoulders or what?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I'd go with your chest measurement - however, if you stomach/mid-section is wider, go with that measurement. Then allow a couple inches for clothing, mobility reasons. These shirts give alot - but make sure the arm measurement fits above all things. My best friend got the M to fit his thinner chest, but the arm holes (gores) were a little too tight in the M size - so he had to go a size larger.
Now his fits fine, it just ends up being a little longer in the end. When in doubt, get the next size bigger. My I have a 46" chest and a 36" waist, but my biceps are 17" - so I had to get the XL when the L would have worked if the arm gores were larger.

Ice Falcon (www.icefalcon.com) he imports from Indai but has mad quality control and great customer service. He sells both welded and riveted in mild, aluminum and stainless too

Check out Von Sussen mail shirt intended for rough SCA fighting. sussen.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page15.htmlIce Falcon makes very high quality armor intended for combat too, but he is expensive. Buying mail from SCA armorers is a good bet to get quality, because they know any armor they sell is going to get beat up. If they sell crap, large angry men who hit hard will hunt them down.

Yeah, the women are no joke in the SCA (heavy list). They use more hip-swing to generate power in their blows. I made a mistake of underestimating a female fighter once and got a chance to find out what it feels like to wear my ribs on the outside of my skin. From that day on, they get equal respect. I hit em hard and I hit em fast

I hit em hard and I hit em fast Couldn't do it... Back when I was a martial arts student, my Sifu took a couple of us to another Dojo to free spar with their students. I got paired up with a girl who was a Tae Kwon Do brown belt. I felt so awkward sparing with her, I just sort of went threw the motions and stayed defensive. She got pissed and knocked me on my $emprini. Good times.

I bought a riveted hauberk from Kingslance...he lists them at $479 but on occasion he'll let them go for around $300; I emailed him and asked when was the next sale and he set up a BIN for me so who knows? Won't hurt to ask. To the OP: if this is just for Renn Faire you can't go wrong- sure you'll lose a couple of rings but if anything, that'll make it seem 'battle hardened' and lend it a touch of authenticity, right? I had a couple of butted shirts, one from MRL and one from Kingslance...the one from KL was a good deal better made with better steel and I had no ringloss from that one but the MRL one did. Bottom line, you get what you pay for- and you can't go wrong with a $100 mail shirt and coif if all you'll do is wear it at the occasional Renn Faire! Edited to add: KL is an eBay store but he also does business as www.wholesalearmor.com
