I think you might want to break it down and have a good look at the tang before trying to cut. I've seen swords like this one at flea markets, and they generally have a welded tang. But you never know for sure with out taking the hilt off. You should be able to take the retaining nut off and the whole assembly come loose.

For 10 dollars you got a nice piece, functional or not.

You may want to post this in the Middle East, India. and Africa sub-forum at SFI for a more authoritative answer, but I am 99% sure that it is a tourist sword, or a ceremonial/display sword at best.

Even if it's real I would treat it carefully..................but I'm also 99% sure it's a wallhanger

The peen is suspiciously indicative of a modern replica. The form is a little incorrect as well. The soldering of the joints is very tell-tale of a modern piece, definately not safe to cut with. I'd give a +1 on that it's a wallhanger.
Still not a bad deal for $10 though! Add a little patina to it to make it look 400 years old and hang it up;D

The peen is suspiciously indicative of a modern replica. Odin, are you seeing something that I am missing? I think I see a retaining nut, not a peen. But I could be wrong.

Same. It has to be a nut. I am also wondering weather it has a rat tail tang...
Desi, you should remove the nut, if it is in fact a nut and take a look at the tang.

looks like a tourist / ceremonial indian tulwar.
never designed for cutting so i wouldnt risk it, though for $10 as long as you are carefull its no big loss is it if it doesnt hold up...
is it sharpened?
