G'day Y'all,
Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy! My Hanwei Mortuary [SH2004] has arrived at last! ;D Love the balance, weight and look of it!
However, on taking it out of the box, a problem became immediately apparent... My hand didn't fit in the basket My pinkie-knuckle wouldn't even fit inside it, and the others rubbed painfully.
I didn't think my paws were that enormous! I've been getting a lot of advice from our good brother Billiam, and he warned me that it was a bit small, but from the measurements he gave me, and from his review on myArmoury, I thought it'd be ok. Well, I was wrong! This is one of the problems of not being able to examine a sword before buying, I guess.
Well, I considered trying to return it or sell it on... for about a nanosecond The problem is, I really, really like everything else about it, and it's partly a birthday present from my wife and daughter. So, what else...?
I considered packing-out the screws that connect the side-bars to the pommel, to see if that would give me enough space. So I took out the screws and bent out the bars till my hand fit comfortably.
As you can see, the gap is a bit big for packing! Ok, now what? I couldn't just leave the side-bars dangling in the air like that...so I cut them off. (those of a delicate disposition may want to look away)
And I have to say, I'm really happy with the result! Once I round off the corners and figure out a way to color the shiny bits to match the rest of the basket (which I'm expecting to be the hardest part of the process!), I think it'll look excellent. Truth told, I'm a fiddler and tinkerer by nature, and I've actually really enjoyed working on the basket this way, and I like the fact that I've now got a sword that's unique to me. I can't imagine owning any sword without doing something to it... although maybe not always something this drastic best of all, I can now hold & swing her comfortably...
So once I've got her sharpened, there's a stack of bottles and tetra-packs out in my shed that've been giving me sassy looks, and I think they need to be taught a lesson! ;D
Cheers
