i'm looking to get a sword belt that i can use with the gen2 witham river viking sword and scabbard that i've got coming in the mail (and ideally with other swords too) i like the look of the double belts like this one: www.reliks.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=748and from what i read they are good because they spread the weight of the sword out around your waist. however, it looks (from that picture) like the sword would be right up against your leg and tripping you up as you walk / sit / whatever... a good solution to this seems to be found here: www.theinnerbailey.com/frogsofthecircle1.htmi like the look of it, but it looks like this "frog of the circle" wouldn't be worn with a double belt (which i also like the look of)... anyway, has anyone tried these or any belts / frogs out? which ones work the best and are comfortable for the best price, and where can i find them? also, how large would a sword need to be before you consider wearing it on your back? just wondering...

I own that first one from MRL (same thing from reliks.) Very beautiful, but it's a little poorly made in some places. First order of business is to replace those horrible leather ties on the securing area of the belt. Use some type of twine for it, but certainly not that thin, weak leather. Mine broke the second time I tried to tie it. Secondly, regardless of what you do, you just are NOT going to. If you pull with the strength needed to completely secure the scabbard, you'll rip those dainty pierced holes in the lather apart!
It is however, nicely finished and very attractive. I am using the buckle form mine for my scabbard project.

Sorry David,
This probably applies to several other members not answering too. I haven't responded to this (though I read and considered your links) because I have not been able to find a belt or frog that looks like something I want. I like the belt you posted, but the rings look fragile, and as you said it would make the scabbard hang against the leg.
I've been considering buying one of those in extra-large. Then I figured I would cut out the rings and wrap the ends where the rings were around the scabbard in the manner of the earlier middle ages. That way the front part of the belt would go on top and the part of the belt coming from the rear would go beneath. That should make the scabbard hang with the tip slightly pointed to the rear, but not drastically so.
Just an idea.

haha, my plea for attention worked so well Rammstein heard it before i even posted thanks for the info! sounds like maybe i should steer clear of that particular double belt. on a slightly random note, i'm going to my first ever SCA heavy fighting practice this sunday !! (i'm very excited). maybe some people there will have some ideas on belts and such...

sca probably isn't your best bet for historical accuracy, though no offense intended to our sca members You may find people who attend that know something. But in context with sca, you are not likely to get something very historically accuracte. Scabbards were generally made with integral belts. Hard to make, but quite a bit more secure than a normal belt because it was custom fitted to your desires (how it hung, etc.) instead of genericly made. Also, a belt the holds via pressure will almost surely fail because all (or most) string like materials will stretch after a while and you won't be getting anywhere near to amount of pressure you would when it was first tied. I don't even know if they were even used historically. Nothing is funner than shouting insults at another knight and trying to draw your sword, only to see that your scabbard is still on ;D!

good point rammstein that would be an awkward situation. and i do find myself shouting insults at knights on a fairly regular basis here's another one from the inner bailey that looks like a viable, perhaps more historically accurate, option: www.theinnerbailey.com/swordbeltsivanhoe2.htm what about that 'frog of the circle', any historical evidence of something like that being used? (it looks pretty sturdy, even if does hold via pressure)

Going a bit off topic[although it is related]
Are there any special belts for japanese swords? Or any technique to hang the sword so it will fit tightly around your hips??
thanks,
-W.H.

That's just about exactly what I was intending on modifying the MRL Double Wrap Belt into. That looks like a nice choice. I may have to try one of those. Or maybe even better this, though looks more renaissance era. They say 13th - 14th century on the site, but I think probably a bit later with the buckles and all. Still, it looks like a possibility. www.theinnerbailey.com/swordbelts.htm#siroliver

Hello David, I love that second link as it is ideal for a sabre as well, which is my preferred weapon. And it looks antiquish enough to fit right in Robert E. Howard's Hyborean age where Conan roamed (Conan was Howard's literary creation). The good thing about the Hyborean age and the Conan stories that REH wrote was that in various locales and settings of the various stories you might find him or someone else armed with a sabre in mounted mercenaries, other times with a cutlass sailing pirates, Arab style shamshirs and tulwars, or read of some noble and their slender rapiers. But Conan usually toted his broadsword in most of REH's stories. But back to the belt and sabre hooks. I love the U.S. Cav sabres of the Civil War era. I love 'em. I love the U.S. Army Sabre Belt of that period too. It is not medieval of course, but a very solid and secure carrying system. One might alter it to make it look ancient or Hyborean. It is one that you can drop the sabre down to hang on the sabre straps for when mounted upon horseback or you can hook it up to the hook on your belt for when you are on foot. But one could mount the upper hook on the belt of the one in the second link for when he did not want his sabre to hang down. One reason I really like that belt set up in the second link is because most of us are into some realm of history or fantasy, reenacting, role playing, just reading and imagining, etc.. AS for me, besides military history of the real world, I also am a big J.R.R.Tolkien and Robert E. Howard fan. My favorite of all is REH's Hyborean age or world that he created, and its main star, Conan the Barbarian, also his literary creation. As I was saying, while in many of the stories Conan totes broadswords, in some he totes cutlasses and in two or three he totes a sabre (he was oftimes a mercenary in mounted outfits, captain of the guard, etc.). So that second link showing belt and hook up would fill the bill for someone wanting to role play, reenact, etc, a part of Conan's world and wear a sabre, which would be correct because sabres were a part of those stories. And there are people who get into role playing Conan's world just as they do Lord of the Rings, etc.. Anyone interested in that might want to check these great forums out (some probably already go there): 1. hyborian.proboards51.com/index.cgi - "The Free Companions of Hyboria", a new discussion forum site of Conan's world. 4. www.conan.com/invboard/ - Official Robert E. Howard and Conan Discussion forums. There are many others but that is enough. But David, thanks for posting those links. That second one is just what I am looking for! Later, Freebooter

KRIEGSCHWERT YOU STINK!!! Just when I was getting my finances sort of straightened out. YOU!!!! gotta find this! Seriously, I have been wanting a few things they offer for a while but just didn't know where to go. Specifically, a shirt and a pair of bracers, along with a belt and a few hangers are definitely in order. Maybe a pair of greaves too. And I wonder about the girl modeling the leather pants... ;D

Yeah, I was gonna mention that the site also features shapely young maidens in leather, but I didn't know if it was appropriate... ;D

thanks for the link kriegschwert! their "angled sword frog" looks pretty good. i think i like the look and the buckles on the frog of the ring from the inner baily a bit better, but this one looks like it might be more comfortable, spreading the weight out a bit more... and they've got LOTR bracers too... very cool

well I can give you my opinion of the double wrap sword belt in about 4 days when mine (ordered it like 2 days ago ironic?) comes in. I ordered mine from medievalcollectibles.com It's like 2-3 bucks cheaper and when i get it I'll tell you what I think. I would have gone for a movie reporduction and gotten ibelins sword belt from kingdom of heaven but it only comes in light brown and I'm a very black, red, and silver person
