Hello all, I finally got to handle the Scimitar at Atlanta Cutlery. I drove over to MRL and Atlanta Cutlery's place in Conyers, Ga the other day to check out and handle their repro German WWII M42 Helmet and see if it and the repro bayonets were worth a hoot. The last time I was there the Shamshir/Scimitar was out of stock. But luckily they had it in this time. So while there I handled the Scimitar (didn't they used to call it a Shamshir?).
I can't give a true review of it here, but I can tell you one thing, I am going to buy it here 'fore long!! Man, it was so nice and light and well balanced. It handled so easily in my hand, was so lightning fast. If and when I get it, I will do a review of it. Later, FB

My wife had bought me a Cold Steel Shamshir for my birthday... and I LOVED the feel, balance, and weight of it. Sadly... it was a bit bent at the last 1/4th of the blade so I sent it back to get a replacement... and was told that the bend was so slight that all the others they had in stock were at least as bent or worse... and that in that price-range I would just have to except that level of issue with the sword. Well, needless to say I dissagreed and thus did NOT get a replacement. However, I'm sad about that because I loved the feel of the blade in hand and would like to have cut with it. The cold steel one is, as Paul discovered, the same as the windlass one BTW, which is why I bring this up at all. So... as it stands, my collection has a scimitar shaped hole in it I hope to fill at some point.

Hello Shadowhowler, I must agree with you in our dissapointment with Cold Steel and their sabres. While they are heavy duty sabres I was not impressed. I have Cold Steel's U.S. Civil War 1860 Cavalary Sabre. It is not an 1860 Lt. model, it is heavier than the 1860s, more like the 184os Heavy Cav Sabre in my mind. While it is a beautiful sabre and extremely well balanced and feels good in my hand, it is a tiny bit heavy for my liking. It comes sharpened and with its weight and robusty build I am quite sure it would cleave right through or into someone.
But like you I did have some problems with it though and had to send it back for repairs (see my review of it, etc,). The blade edge had like a dip in it about a foot back from the point as if someone held the grinder in that spot a tad too long. I had problems with the scabbard guts coming out too. I sent it back but I have never been satisfied with it actually because they did not fix the problem with the scabbard or the dip in the blade edge. It appeared to me that they just tried to ground it down a bit in that area but the dip is still slightly noticable.
The guts came out of the scabbard and now the sabre just falls out of the scabbard if tilted. There were two small blocks glued inside the scabbard along with strips of plastic to hold the blade snugly in the scabbard. All this came out. They sent it back and it did it again. While the sabre is basically well made and robust, the scabbard, or at least the "gripping" parts inside it, are just cheap junk in my opinion. It is in my gun box, untouched and unloved! I wish I had've never ordered it since I prefer the true U.S. 1860 Light Cavalry Sabre. MRL's are very nice for the money btw. Later, FB

Hey Slayer of Darkness, Do you by any chance have any WWII German or Japanese gear or equipment, bayonets, helmets, etc. (repro stuff is fine)? I would trade for something/s in that area. Btw, I live near Montgomery, Alabama, at least not across the country from you in case we work something out. Later, Dave

Well, unfortunately, i'm 14 and my collection is severely limited. however, I've been collecting pocket knives and daggers for 2-3 years, so I have some of those I could part with. I also have a magnificent old (about 50-100 years old, that is ) carbon steel medieval sword with a beautiful blackened blade that I got at an auction; not worth much as a cutter (it is threaded, and comes loose INCREDIBLY EASILY), but a display piece to be proud of. Would you like some pics??? Oh, and I also happen to have a truckload of SLO's that you could display, or ebay, for that matter . Thanks, mate, durability over handling is cool with me, so I don't mind the extra weight. as for the scabbard, it would make a nice DIY project, wouldn't it? lol.
