I'm dreaming about daito, shoto & tanto set from one of the modern blacksmiths... After that, I'll rest in tranquility. It doesn't hurt to dream, does it ?

These are coming in next week, already ordered: Dynasty Forge Musha Shobu Dynasty Forge Bushi 1095 Niiice!!! Dynasty Forge shobus looks awesome. which bushi 1095 did you get? the tameshigiri geometry one? Yep, the 1095 with moko vine theme, 28.5 " blade w/no bo hi. I figured that would be a better cutter than the forge folded line. Hey kenpachi did you find a sub 500 sword with a lot of sori? I'm interested in that too, i'm sure it will cut better...and in my opinion curvature looks fantastic. There is the hanwei odachi with 2.75 inch of sori...not quite sub 500, but with marc I'm sure you can get a great deal on one.

Ok, my computer crashed just as I was posting my list, so this is my second attempt. This time I'll save text! (Stoopid computer! ) Sadly, the parlous exchange rate for the AUD means I'm stuck with swords from local vendors for the moment, which limits my choice considerably.... Well, I'm still waiting for my Hanwei Mortuary (SH2004), should be this week or the next! So, now I'm trying to decide on a cutlass. I'll probably get the Hanwei Naval Boarding Cutlass (SN610), although I'm looking at one from a company I've only just discovered, called Medieval Fightclub- www.medieval-fightclub.com/prod278.htm It's shorter than I'd like, but it is cheap, and since I want two of them for my first conversion experiment, into a matched pair of 17th century shell-guard hangers, it might be the go... After that, well, under consideration for the next few years are- *Hanwei Scottish Basket Hilt Backsword (SH2003)- I love the Horned Man figure on the basket! *Hanwei Side Sword (SH2203)- Despite the hilt and tang issues. I reckon I can replace the grip, if it's still made of hollow plastic, and tighten-up the rest of the hilt assembly. For the price, I still think it's a lovely sword. *Hanwei Scottish Claymore (SH2060)- Of the available versions, this is far and away the nicest. *Cold Steel Gim- They're expensive here, but I really love the look of this sword, and it's gotten rave reviews here on SBG *A couple of Hanwei Daos- Maybe two SH1011s, a Miaodao SH2275, a Dadao SH1012, and a Pudao SH2072. Now, I'd like to think that'd do me, but I'm old enough to know that there'll be more... ;D Mind you, if the exchange rate improves, then I'll be looking at Armour Class of Scotland (Mortuary, and a couple of 17thC Hangers), and G.Gedney Godwin (Colichemarde Smallsword and a couple of Hangers). If I won Lotto, or robbed a bank or something, then the Albion Lady Vivamus would be Mine, Mine Mine! ;D And I reckon Arms and Armor of Minneapolis would get a big order (Town Guard Sword, Serenissima, Musketeer, Smallsword....) Ahh, sweet, sweet dreams of blades to come..... Cheers Marc E

That being said, it really depends on what you're looking for. You've said in a previous post that you value "durability over handling" - my question to you would be why? Some people value historical accuracy more, others just want something that they can do "backyard cutting" with - which I really recommend getting training for (/hypocrite). It really does come down to what you want to use them for, because I don't know a person here who'd recommend an Albion for backyard beating that would likely result in a busted sword (although most of those same people would also suggest not doing ANYTHING to a sword that is likely to break it except in very special circumstances - and I'd be one of those people...) I think that what most of the people here are saying is, if you're planning on spending $30K on swords, don't make them all sub-300 models - because while there are great finds to be had, even half of 30K will buy some great high end swords. The reason that i said I would prefer durability, is simply that I love to hack small trees apart, and that I don't want to worry about my swords snapping in two if I accidentally hit my driveway or such . I don't actually have any 'sword training', per se, but I AM a blackbelt in American Kenpo, as well as having self-trained with toy lightsabers since I was about 6, lol ... Also, the reason for all the sub $300's, and also the 20k of Brenno's, is that, well, at 14, I'm not going to picking up many $1000 swords, you know? So, the -$300's are simply my goal until I'm 18 and get a job, then I'll dedicate myself to Fableblades, and maybe a few Albions as well. As far as the sub $300's on my list, I'm going to start a thread in a minute asking people's opinions on why or why not to get these swords. I'd greatly appreciate any input from you guys! Thanks, Slayer

Thanks, Slayer Well I suggest you don't hack apart trees. Other then killing the tree, it's very unsafe. As for sword training, if you can get formal sword training, it'll do ya good. Even if it is sport based like kendo. My first sword is a 900 dollar custom piece from kirby wise. I got this is college when I had less money then in high school...so collecting money for a good piece is not impossible at a young age. It just takes discipline...something that is also good to have for sword ownership.

Oh, please don't tell me i've gotten on your bad side, ColdNapalm? i'd love to get sword training, but I don't know of anywhere in Tallahassee, Florida to train . The trees...yeah, you're probably right...but it's so much fun! mainly, I limit myself to bottles though, just every now and then, eh? . Thanks, man.

You can try the SCA. I know they exists in florida since Jason from AoV does that around there . Hacking trees is unsafe because you can misjudge the strength of a branch, over cut and cut your leg open...like in the swords are not toys thread. And it doesn't take long for you to bleed out from a wound like that. But if you MUST cut trees, then I suggest you take all the precautions and keep a cell phone on hand, along with a first aid kit. And have a buddy nearby as well. All of this is actuially a good idea no matter what your cutting actually .

Yeah, I only cut limbs when I have absolutely NO chance of going through it and into me. I've always been careful about that sort of thing, because my uncle once hacked a rotten branch with an axe, misjudged the strength of the limb, and buried the axe between his toes...OUCH! I'm actually planning on joining the SCA soon, just waiting for the next meeting . thanks for being so helpful Cold Napalm, although I'll naturally disagree about ANYTHING bad said about DSA , you've been a huge help. +1 to you, mate! (I'm thinking that the title 'Swordmaster' applies nicely here...)

SlayerofDarkness: Wouldnt worry about Cold Napalm, is aptly named somedays (winking at you CN ) But seriously he's one of many for lack of a better term "Pro-Collectors" here on the forum. Blokes who have had a wide collecting spread, cut with tried all manner of blades, best part they are'nt snobby wankers about it either and nothing but cool and honest. The good thing is that some of the bigger names (and even some humble men at arms) on this forum have training in swords, it gives them a "critical and professional" edge in assessing live edge blades. Even "DIY Training guys" like ShooterMike have brilliant insight and prowess with blades (seriously Mike good form mate wouldnt wanna be tatami round you ..... dead twice before it hit the ground). Any good advice from them is gold, or at least green saved in your pocket for another piece of steel ............ DSA's are good, quote 13th Warrior "I cannot lift this, ha! grow stronger". Their balance is good, heat treat good, ticks all the boxes BUT if you got a big more dough then investing higher is good ............ Start humble - Get a DSA Europeon, get a Cheness or Musashi Japanese, windlass eeerrrr yeah get one ......... for 3 blades in the under 300 range you can develop a "Benchmark of Appreciation" to furthur your collecting from .......... then maybe test the waters a bit furthur with LOTS AND LOTS of good advice from SBG forum ........... one step one slice at a time ............................................. there did I plug all that enough ........................ EEEEKKK MY WIFE !!!!!!!!!!!! LOGOUT

(I could use one of those... ) You can find a whole list of avatars by clicking on your own name where you find it, then click on the modify profile bit... you'll find a list of options. There is a way to 'port in your own pictures... but I have not bothered to figure it out.

BTW, Brisy Beater, where did you find that AWESOME avatar??? (I could use one of those... ) Its Geralt the Witcher (professional monster slayer) based off the PC RPG Game "The Witcher" which comes from an independant polish game developer based off a bunch of polish fantasy novels. Awesome swordsman, type Geralt into google no doubt find heaps. I use photobucket to upload the pic then in my profile settings use the URL of the photobucket as the reference for the pic. So Slayer, if you have to pic YOUR NEXT SWORD ..... whats it gonna be ....... ask peoples thoughts on it

Oh, that's easy...it will be the DSA Grayson as there are only 5 left . After that...I'm not sure. Maybe the VA Bristol if it has come out yet, or maybe the Gen2 Black Prince. Thanks for the Avatar info!

EEEEKKK MY WIFE !!!!!!!!!!!! LOGOUT That reminded me of the Killer Rabbit scene from Monty Python's Holy Grail.. "RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!!" That really gave me a laugh!! As for my list... Well, I'm just now getting back into the sword game after MANY years, so, I'm still familiarizing myself for what's out there. I've got an SBG custom on the way, so, that's a start. Eventually I want a daisho set, possibly from Ronin Swords. I do like a couple of sub $300, such as the Kaze, but after I obtain a few at the sub $300 level, I'm going to start saving/searching for nihonto, or modern production tamahagane. My long term goal is to have several high end pieces rotating through my collection. I do like a lot of other types of swords. Gladius, various long swords, basket-hilts, some rapiers. I'd like to find a nice Schiavonna, as it was one of the first swords I fell in love with in a Museum Replicas Limited catalog circa 1995. This thread has really got me thinking, I do need to put together a lest of specific models. That will help motivate me in my saving. Eventually the goal is to have enough on hand that I can just sell/trade to keep my sword supply fresh. I know that's what several SBG members do, and it seems like the best plan. It's just that initial investment I'm working on now.

hmm... With a baby coming in the upcoming weeks i'll have to trim down my wishlist for this year... So right now i only see two blades that might found a new home on my walls until 2010. PC Practical Pro Katana Elite. That would be a first step for me in the asian weaponery. Looks like a big bad ass blade, i've handle a few PC katanas, like the shinto and the mushashi but they didnt feel right for me, i need something larger. For the second that might be a custom blade of my design, i've been toying around with Illustrator for the last couple of months designing a fantasy sword and now i've come to something i really like, now i just need to shop for the maker One day i'll need to get my hands on a Lutel swiss saber, or any good saber, anyone have a suggestion ? As for the sub300 market i would really like to get a KC or DelTin Celtic sword a windlass Erbach or swedish viking... or a Deli tin falchion .. and .. how will i be able to limit myself ?!?!

Hmmm... legitimately, I'd have to refer to a design forming in my head and the swordsmith I posted under 'droolworthy swords' in the cafe on this page: /index.cgi?action=display&board=forumcafe&thread=6306&page=11

As with so many others, the economy has put a damper on things.
Only one on the list for this year and hopefully won't be too long before I am able to go for it....
Del-Tin # 5155 Gothic hand & a half....
cheers,
Bill

Well, I've been a JSA fan for years, never had any practical JSA training, the only MA I've had experience in at all is Muay Thai... so although I've always wanted a katana (or several), it's never been high on my list of priorities... however, things change.
My list: 1) Dynasty Forge 1095 Bushi class - on order as soon as I get a reply from the Aussie distributor whose lack of response is starting to annoy me quite a bit. 2) A custom blade in shirasaya, traditional geometry in a modern steel, swordsmiths choice. 29"ish, 12" tsuka, silver habaki, simple, beautiful. 3) Save up for custom mounting of the custom blade, and probably remount the DF 1095 to complement. 4) Retire, enjoy the grandkids (because at this rate that's how long it'll take me to get my hands on item #1, let alone the custom...)
The way it's going, I could save my pennies and get a custom blade in shirasaya before I even get a reply email or returned phone call from the Aussie DF distributor... Sad state of affairs.
