I found SBG while looking for my iaito this past spring. While shopping, I joined this forum and I found all the great videos here. That was it. Game over. I was thoroughly and truly bitten by the “cutting bug”. But, alas, my dojang does not do any test cutting . I really feel that to fully understand and improve my technique I need the tactile feedback of actual cutting. So, I became enamored with the idea of doing some cutting on my own. While I was learning about shinken, the Kokoro Ichi project started, and I was lucky enough to be one of the members here who was able to purchase one. Then the wait began, and well, I guess I got impatient. So, I ordered a Musashi Mokko to keep myself busy while I waited. I posted a review a little while back, but I could not do any cutting due to the weather here in NY. Well, it finally warmed up enough to melt the snow and dry the driveway enough to do some cutting! It was very fun, and VERY informative, lol. It was a great Sunday afternoon. I will definitely be doing this again… This is a vid of my very first cutting of anything ever with a sword. In fact, it is my very first edited video. I left in a lot of stuff that normally would come out of a final video as I am not very proficient with the editing functions in Movie Maker yet, sorry. There is probably more air cutting in there than real cutting, but until I figure out how to edit that out….at least it is short You guys are an inspiration. Thank you to everyone here who has posted their videos . I promised myself I would do the same, even if it caused me terminal embarrassment. But, I was actually pretty pleased that I could cut anything at all, so it is all good here. I would love to hear anything you have to say (after you stop laughing )

Bravo. The best "backhand" I've seen in a long time! Most cutters only show us their right side cut (migi yokogiri). Do you find the hidari yokogiri more natural?

Hey Debbie! Nice cutting! A bit of practice will help with your aim but you've already got some good form behind the cutting so you're well on your way.

great to finally see you cutting Debbie. Your training is really showing, your cuts are crisp and clean. very nice form. I enjoyed watching every swing even the ones that didn't hit. how easily does your table-top fall off that stand? seems to me like you were dropping it when it should have normally stayed. is it wobbly at all? just thought I'd ask.
so +1 for showing us all what a really good crisp hidari yokogiri (or whatever those Haidong Gumdo folks call it) looks like.

Thanks to everyone for all the kind words and karma Ricwilly, It is very fun ;D thank you. Now all I need is a purple dress, right? Marc, Thank you! Sorry about the song, it was getting late last night and I just punted. Hi Larry, Thank you very much Hidari is left to right and yokogiri is a horizontal cut? If so, then yes. I can't go the other direction with much success at all. msmalik, will do, I forgot about that sorry. Sam, Thanks, my aim is already improving . I did some more cutting today after I fixed my stand. Thank you billiam - I like this black vortex. Tom, My top falls off in a light wind, lol. So, today I fixed it and it worked much better. I posted my best ones in the Milk Jug challenge thread (9+2) . Thanks for the Japanese terminology, in Korean it is called Hwangdan Begi.

Thanks for posting this, it was exciting to say the least. I am truly in awe of you..... I better just leave it at that, lest i forget to remain a gentleman. +1 karma,

That was great Debbie.
If you don't mind me adding a little observation, I think the reason you knocked the bottle over a couple of times is that during the cut you are already beginning to turn the blade back up to the high position (Jodan). The successful cuts got through the target (straight line A to B) before returning to Jodan. The cut needs to be completed before the next movement. Even if it is done fast. Just trying to be helpful with a little feedback.
But you really can handle a sword well and your training shines through. Really well done for first time cutting.

Hidari is left to right and yokogiri is a horizontal cut? If so, then yes. I can't go the other direction with much success at all. Yep. Hidari=left, yoko=horizontal/side, giri=cut I'm a neophyte at this and had to reference my shinkendo text to get these terms correct. The book was standard issue when I started training. Shikendo: Japanese Swordmanship by Toshishiro Obata is excellent. It captures in stills the techniques presented for first year ISF students (1) suburi--swinging, body movement, sword movement; (2) battoho--drawing methods; (3) tanrengata--solo forms; (4) tachiuchi--sparring and (5) tameshigiri--test cutting guidelines. It's hakama deep in japanese terminology but comes with a concise glossary. I find the text an invaluable reference. I studied two years ago, hyper-extended my left elbow, had to back off for a few months, have not resumed formal study (yet), but do find the book a superior reference which allows me to keep what little skills I do have fresh. The annotated stills very clearly show how to perform the 1st year techniques. And, when needed, two perspectives are provided. Of course nothing beats the eyes and feedback of a training partner, but the book can be used in conjunction with your other training. Enjoy.

Thanks for the tip raven! I have to figure out how to do slo-mo so I can look at this in detail. I fixed my stand - I think that was my biggest problem so far - lol. I was able to get much better cuts without knocking over the jug after that. Thanks for the reference Larry. I really want to learn the Japanese terminology for the analogous cuts that we do in Gumdo. I have been surviving by google up to now :-/ I will look into getting this. Thank you! Debbie

Awesome first cuts... thanks for sharing with us. As others have said, your stance and form look very, VERY good... and just looking at that I would not belive you have not cut anything before. Obvously this is due to your traditional training, which is something many of us don't have. I didn't want to wander into the off topic realm of flattery, but I just can't help it. While beautiful women with swords may be very attractive, such as seen in the Beauty and the Blade calander... nothing and I mean NOTHING is more sexy then a woman with a sword looking like she KNOWS how to use it. ;D My wife trained a little bit in Wushu. One of the first times I saw her she was doing a kata down by the pier where I used to live... and I could not stop watching, I was hooked. Good memory. I look forward to more of your cutting. Soon as I can figure out my wifes awefull video camera I hope to add some video to my upcoming reviews and future bottle contests... but one thing is certain... even if I cut well, I won't look 1/100th as good as you while doing it.

Good Heavens Shadow, Being a male sword guy, I too love women, especially with swords.
But this young girl said she did not have any feedback on cutting and is putting herself forward in the cutting tips forum. Yeah she is pretty cute and the sunnies are a great touch but apart from our desires I am sure that Debbie is just one of us who are striving for knowledge.
If I can help I would be honored, but this chick is pretty good and I think that she could help me also.
Constrain yourself. Raven.
