The diagrams I have seen for the Japanese test cuts on a human body start where the shoulder meets the neck and end at the opposite hip, just above the pelvis. Considering the damage any decent sword can do to living tissue, I would seriously take it at face value. Just a bit more of the OT then we'll return to the Gel (unless that topic has been exhausted): The diagonal cut from one shoulder to the opposite hip is called kesagiri in Toyama-ryu. Fiore calls it fendente and accords it as much importance as the Japanese do. Most Filipino bladed arts start with these cuts as well. Maybe someone can fill in regarding the German longsword? The reason is simple: even if you manage shallow damage, the shoulder is well onits way to becoming inoperable. As you get deeper with your damage you approach the lungs, aorta and heart. It's as close to a grand slam as you can get.

Hey kortoso, It's considered the strongest strike in German longsword. Zornhau, the strike of wrath. Many of the basic techniques are taught from this strike. I think it's also been called a Vatterstreich (father strike) for this reason.

Hey absilits, If you were going to do a diagonal cut, maybe you could set the gel in layers? Do a bottom layer and stick in a bamboo spine before it sets. After it sets (or sets enough) drop four little bamboo sticks on top to represent the front and back of one set of ribs, then pour on another layer of gel. Repeat this until you have a full rib cage and a set of collar bones held together by the spine. Maybe even wrap it in cheese cloth or something to simulate the surface tension of skin or the resistance of clothing.
Just a thought.

It would get a little expensive, but soft leather like gloves are made of would be the closest approximation for skin. Though it might be a bit of overkill?

Theres got to be something out there that is a little cheaper. Multiple layers of "contractor bags", the ultra heavy duty garbage bags they sell at Home Depot for cleaning up around construction sites? They are about 3 or 4 times as thick and strong as heavy duty trash bags. And they are huge and cheap. Might be worth a try to see?...

I think trash bags might cheaper than latex. And since I work in a construction trade, I have access to contractor bags.

Plastic bags of any kind aren't going to cut right. Latex would probably be the best non-leather option.

Hmm, I second what taran just said. Plastic bags won't behave like skin.

Maybe you need a better paying job. As long as its in shape for cooking afterwards, it could be used twice.

I'll pay you to shave my back hair, nobody else wants the job. How are you with barbeque sauce? BTW, I put in a question at Mythbusters to see what they pay. I know the top price is around $100, but there are doubtless places where you can get a pig carcass wholesale. So you're off the hook for now, Bishop.
