interesting. I always just assumed 'service no 1' was a made up term to make it obvious that this is the current service model, as mk5 doesnt really make it obvious that this is the kukri currently used by the military.
I dont think you get many service no 1's with a visable temper though. Sounds like you got a nice one.

I always just assumed 'service no 1' was a made up term to make it obvious that this is the current service model not quiet ... "service n° 1" denotes a brighter, more polished kukhuri with a more splendidly buffed scabbard ("spit and polish" !) with other words ... issued for "parades" "service n°2 issue" means used for daily service ... a field Kukhuri as you like !

I don't think you get the same quality or reputation though, Yangdu of HI is a phenomenal lady to do business with from all the things I have read about her and her khuks and I have to say it would be long before I do business with her. I am willing to pay a bit more when it is either a) great service or b) a good cause.

I think you have it backwards. My No.1 has the regular matte rawhide scabbard and regular blade. I think the No. 2's are the parade kuks.

I don't think you get the same quality or reputation though, ... Uh...I'm sure you'd find both to be higher, myself, but maybe I just don't know. This may be the case, but I'd rather pay for something that has been around on its own merit, rather than because the internet swears they're good. No, really, they're great. Promise. Of course, I'm just biased toward antiques, really. What greater quality or reputation can you expect than a genuine antique kukri? This thing fought wars, you know. A few of them, I'd wager. It's still here. That speaks far more for it than whether it looks pretty or can chop wood. Oh, wait, both still apply. Whoops, nevermind. I need to get some more kukris....

Exactly random. No doubt the HI kukris are great. But you cant beat the quality on some of the vintage / antique ones. Some of the private purchase officer ones have stunning build quality and some history to them too.

Why don't you provide us with a source, instead of just saying "NO !" Here, I will: "And the service no. 1 is the most famous all over the world as it is used by Gorkhas. It is used to all British Gurkha Soldiers on enlistment and retains it throughout their army career. This is used during in warfare." "[The Service no. 2] is similar to the Service No. 1 except the scabbard. The scabbard is made of patent leather and is used for ceremonial purposes. Therefore it is also called service Ceremonial. The blade is highly polished and it is made of highly graded carbon steel." www.gurkhaskhukuri.com/services_khukuri.html

here ... I will too ! ;D Why don't you provide us with a source, instead of just saying "NO !" www.ikrhs.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4442nd ... post for instance ! ... believe me, this is no big issue to me ! just thought I could help If the people at I.K.R.H.S don't know what they're talking about I'm not to blame ! If you say your pattern 2 is the parade version ... that suits me By the way ... due to lack of time I answered so shortly in my first response.

Hmm...interesting. My thinking had been along the same lines as slav's, as I'd read all the same things as him. I'd almost wager this fellow on the forum you linked is a little confused... Though I've never been one to take the word of an account on a forum over a name with credentials....................just me, though.

The source I linked was from Kukri House itself. Kukri house IS current contractor for the Gurkhas' service issue kukris, so I would tend to trust them over a one-line forum post by Mr. "sirupate".

When I entered the forum I promised myself never getting dragged into something like "this " ... but there you go ... somethings you simply don't have in hand ... The source I linked was from Kukri House itself. Kukri house IS current contractor for the Gurkhas' service issue kukris Strange !! The people of "Kukhuri Palace" claim the Gurkha contract as-well !!! ahh yes ... LINK ! www.kukhuripalace.com/Concerning the fact that the opinion of a "senior moderator" from an INDEPENDENT respected forum concerning Kukhuri's, should be doubted, is another matter. This doesn't bother me the slightest, it worst case it could only bother "Mr Sirupate". ... Interesting point of view though witch I certainly will keep in mind when reading further posts on this forum in future. I never wanted to cause any havoc on the mater and was convinced that you were liberal enough to indulge other people's comments and thoughts on certain issue's. perhaps I was wrong ! My apologies ... Hugh

Hmm, there are some Service No. 1 kukris for sale on eBay. I asked the seller about who makes them and whether they are genuine mil. conctract kuks. Here is his interesting response: "Hi, We have a different producer, their kamis are in Dharan. Contrary to Khukuri House claims they have not got the Gurkha contract for many years. In fact I do not even think they tray any more as it is more profitable to sell them overseas. The current contract for the new recruits is under review and hopefully our supplier will get it again. It will not be KH though." EDIT: In fact, I think his supplier is these guys: www.gurkhaskhukuri.com/services_khukuri.htmlSince they are also made in Dharan and claim the same mil. contract.

Hmm... Interesting. But what about the thousands of other kukri sites that also claim the contract?
