Thanks Ric I Agree. A review should be a persons thoughts on a sword that he bought. Not his friends thoughts on the sword that they may have never handled. I like your bit about ratings. +1 I'd offer just one counter thought to this... If the ratings have no uniformity... meaning if they are completely subjective from person to person... then they are useless. Without some form of yardstick... then ratings become nothing more then personal opinion without context. If one person has never held a sword in their life... and they buy a Windlass Long Sword... they might think 'Wow, this sword is the BEST It feels great!' however another collector who has handled many other swords... everything from production Windlass blades to custom Atrim and Tinker swords... that person might think 'Well, the sword is decent for it's pricepoint, but the balance is off and the blade is too whippy for decent thrusting.' So person A rates the Windlass a 5/5 for handling... while person B rates it a 3/5 because he has handled better weapons. The same weapon... two different perspectives... two VERY different reviews. Now, I have not handled EVERY sword in the world... or even 1/4th as many as someone like ShooterMike... but I have handled enough to get the idea of different feels, weights, balances and so on. I try to keep that in mind when reviewing a sword. At any rate... in the end of COURSE anyone kind enough to help out the comunity by offering a review has the right to do that review HOWEVER they want. I think the only point *I* was trying to make was... we do this to help each other out, to come together as a community to keep one another more informed then any one of us could be by his/her self. Thus... we should strive form some sense of uniformity in our reviews... so that they are as helpfull as possible. My $0.02.

Howler, your point is taken. I agree that all reviews are subject to the reviewers experience, be it a sword or car or whatever being reviewed. As such they are in part opinion. One person may find a corvette to be excellent value for money, I wouldn't as I don't care for corvettes, not my thing. Same with swords, what kind of sword am I looking for? A KC gladius may not be as good a sword as a high end Katana to some. Me, I like the gladius. More value for money to me.
What I look at in a review are the stats, pob, weight ect.... These things are solid fact, free of bias and I take pains to be accurate in these and hope others are also. Also pictures and a video of the sword in action is of great value to me, in this area we at SBG outdo the others in my experience. Then the discussion we have here about a review is also of value. That's when we can get diverse opinions and other peoples experience with the sword being reviewed. All these things help.
To me the rating system is an afterthought and entirely the opinion of the reviewer. If it was up to me I'd scrap it.
The two main sword forums don't seem to use a rating system, even the one that recently has been dissing ours.

Yeah, my fault. I apolized for it before and do so again. At this point a new thread about the subject might be in order.
Once again, sorry about the hijacking.

Sage words from RicWilly as usual... I agree that the actual numbers/ratings of something in the review is probably the LAST thing I look at when going over the review. However, it might be the FIRST thing a less experinced person looks at... and for the reviews that get 'ported over to the main site certainly it might be one of the main if not THE main thing a prospctive buyer looks at when trying to pick a sword. Not all the buyers who use the reviews as a guideline show up here and engage in the disscussion around the review itself. In fact, I was aware of this site a full 2 years before I joined the forums. Thats why I think its worth our while to be AS objective as possible and self critical when chossing our ratings in our reviews... so they will be as helpfull as they can be to all the people who may use them... including the people that don't come to the forums and get the FULL context by reading the review thread. That said... for those of us that DO partake in the forums and the review threads... I agree with you Ric... the actual numbers of the rating system on the review are by far the least important part of the review.

Thanks for the review, Con.
I picked up a functional Musashi Last Samurai daisho set, with tanto, for $200. Really like it; did my first triple gallon milk jug cut with the wakizashi last week.
Within the confines of its price range for a TH 1045 sword, I think the swords are a decent value.

Con, great review that (unfortunately) doesn't qualify for any more review points, as it has already been reviewed - but you are well on your way with those already I see!

Ha ha, thanks for the karma con. ;D I got lucky and found and bought this sword on craigslist for cheap. Not a bad blade, it'll make a fun custom job. The same' is real on this one. Have some karma for the review.
