by: Con/Benjamin Searle
Hey everyone, Merry Christmas or Happy holidays, which ever you prefer. I just opened a box under da tree and look what I found!
Actually I asked My mom for this sword, and this one only. I didn't want her to be conned into buying a "battle-ready Stainless steel sword". She bought it from Trueswords so there are plenty of those. So, what do I like about this particular sword? Everything. Seeings how it's my first Samurai sword, anything would be great. But the fact that it's from the Movie "The Last Samurai" starring Tom Cruise. It's an AWESOME movie that I think everyone and their grandmother should see. Thus it gives you a powerful feeling, like you want to take on the entire Imperial army of Japan!... or a pop bottle ... but enough of my blather. Onto the review. (I apologize ahead of time for poor photo quality)
[shadow=red,left,300]Specs[/shadow]
I have measured and found that the measurments on TrueSwords are accurate:
Blade Length: 28 inches
Handle Legth: 10 3/4 of an inch
Overall Length: 41 inches
Weight: 2.25 lbs
POB: 5 Inches from Guard
COP: somewhere between 1/2 way down the blade to 2/3's of the wasy down.
There are some really cool acid etched symbols on the blade. heres a pic from the TrueSwords Website, they have the translation:
Now here's my pic:
[shadow=red,left,300]The Blade[/shadow]
The Blade on this thing is beautiful with its tempered edge, acid etchings, and wicked curve. The Blood Groove runs deep on both sides of the blade. The tip is wickedly sharp. I have to point out that it came sharp and before I did the video (below) I did not sharpen it. I don't think it was really needed. It was as sharp if not sharper than I could have gotten it. And I will not let my accusharp even touch this thing.
[shadow=red,left,300]The Grip[/shadow]
Black wrapping... not much else to say really. The white "Ray Skin" underneath is quite nice. The fittings are harder to see. The fact that it is black is a blessing. You won't get it dirty, at least, not visibly.
[shadow=red,left,300]The Tsuba[/shadow]
I think the Tsuba/Gaurd is kinda cool. Like I said before, this is my first Samurai sword. So some of the terminology is new to me. I have no idea how to "rate" it. I think it looks cool. Apparently it's made of copper.
[shadow=red,left,300]The Pommel[/shadow] -Black, Plastic, basic. Not too extravagant. However, it fits conviently into my belt-buckle loop. Handy versus tying it everytime i want to carry it with me.
[shadow=red,left,300]CUTTING[/shadow]
Now for the fun part!
As you can see, the sword cut through everything with ease. The only reason someone could not cut with this sword would be a sloppy form. Which in this video I had. Give me some credit though I had very little room to move. I couldn't cut anywhere else sadly. There is about 3 feet of snow on the ground at my house.
Some of my opponents... some of my opponents remains...
This I found was interesting. I attempted to cut an empty milk jug. I have tried this with other swords and have been unable to do so. But this time it was a slightly different story;
I was actually able to cut it. I was just short of trimming it in 2. oh well.
[shadow=red,left,300]Conclusion and SBG ratings[/shadow]
I Love this thing, it cuts well, handles well, and is an all around good sword. I wish I had added this sword to my collection earlier. I believe that almost anyone could afford this $60 sword. It would be a great learning sword for beginners and would deffinately be great as a christmas present. As my Mother has shown me. I do hope you purchase this sword or another on of Musashi's swords.
Historical Accuracy: 2/5 amazingly like the sword in the movie but no real His. accuracy
Fit and Finish: 2/5 Plastic Shealth
Handling: 5/5 (hey just noticed theres only 1 "a" in handling!)
Structural Integrity: 3/5 Zinc alloy Tsuba (just found out)
Value for Money: A quite obvious 5/5! A great sword. no complaints what-so-ever.
Overall: 3/5
