Hi All, I recently bought a Gen 2 Celtic from the 'Bay. I'm quite happy with it, but I noticed that I cannot see the 'peen' on the 'head' of the hilt like the one in Paul's review.... it seems to be just brass. Could anyone tell me if mine is indeed peened or if I have an early model that is not?? Any help is appreciated!

That is the old version with a screw on pommel. Thats what I feared. Thanks for the feedback, Jason. I should have bought it from you in the first place instead of trying to save a buck...thought I was too old for that..

According to their site, Gen2 still makes three swords with threaded tangs: Irish hand-and-a-half, 16th C. Scottish, and Mainz Gladius. A threaded rather than peened tang is not necessarily a bad thing if done well (and I believe Gen2's are probably done well ). The main thing is that it isn't historically accurate (to which I generally say "meh..." anyway ;D). If you got it for a good price (say, $100-120 range, for example), then you got a pretty good deal.

Thanks kriegschwert, Actually, I did get a pretty good deal, I think ( $220 for the Celtic and the Falcata) but I really hoped it would be peened. I've owned quite few Atrims, Lundemos, Tinkers, ect that were not peened and they have been great.

$220 is great for both swords, even though you didn't get the peened version of the Celtic. Despite the fact that the peened version looks cooler with that big old silver tang rivet up against the brass pommel, yours should still hold up just fine. I've heard of one threaded Gen2 sword breaking, and that was Tsafa's Irish sword, which is a much longer, heavier sword, with a big pommel that you can get a ton of leverage on. Plus, It looks to me like the whole pommel and portion of "tang" you can see through the pommel are actually the nut, in other words, the whole thing screws on, with the threads being in the lower half (Imaybe Clyde will confirm this?). I wouldn't expect any such troubles from the Celtic.

Sorry to hear you didn't get the current peened version. But even as is, it's a damn good slicer and dicer that one - I actually probably need to update my review... Goes through Tatami like a Katana, and it was the blade of choice for a utilitarian task of harvesting some bamboo from a forest near my folks house. Actually quite scary what this little sword can do... Perfect clean cuts into bamboo, I'd hate to see what this sword would do to flesh and bone... Indeed, if a Celtic chieftan had one of these it would quickly get a reputation as being seriously 'magical'!

I really do not see you having any trouble out of the sword at all. Just surprised that some one out there still have 1 of the old threaded pommels. Sorry I have not been posting much just trying to get the site updated and figure why the sales have taken a dump. I know it is the economy and the hikes in gas, but boy . Also trying to get the large shipment paid for and in, we are so low on stock and have been for some time. I hope this helps. Take care guys, I will post teasers when we do have some new items coming but it will not be until May or June. Well except for 1 new design. He/he/he ;D

Clyde, when was the last time you made the Celtic with a threaded tang? I'm guessing at least a couple years?

I'll no doubt have to try to pick up one of the peened models in the future.
