Hey all. After the success of my VA Atrim practical sword modification I have decided to launch another project. As you probably know cold steel is having a large Christmas sale, any way, I just bought one grosse messer and bastard sword. My plan is 1:heavily modify ol' grossy (heavily, as in make it a whole new messer ) 2: fix that darned pommel assembly on the bastard sword 3:and most important document the modification for your entertainment. It may take some time to get this project under way, and brought to completion. But I think it will be interesting. Check back later for updates. Best wishes all, Marty

Hi every one, sorry I took so long between announcing this project and actualy posting it, the gross messer project is on hold, but the bastard sword is complete. Any way, here she goes. the first part was to wrench off the pommel, with a vice clamp. The pommel is held on by a crappy threaded rod and wrenched off easily. The tang it self , thankfully, is what I call 'sweet glorious, really wide tang' The grip came off easily, with a chisel (I used a screwdriver, but for now it was a chisel). The guard (which rattled out of the box) slid off. Then I dremeled down the blade to create more tang, sorry no pics of that. I widened the tang, slightly, so that the guard would sit tight. Then machined down a narrower section for the pommel. And voila! Quick note; since I was shortening the blade I also shortened the grip so the sword is now effectively a one hander. The pommel was hot peened using an acetylene touch. The grip was made from some oak, and ground down to shape and epoxied on, sandwich style. The blue tape is to keep epoxy off the pommel and leather string to hold the grip in place till the glue set. I have the new leather grip on, but I am without a camera right now. I'll post pics of the finished grip shortly.

The C/S Bastard has always been a favorite of mine as far as the sword's look went but I never bought one...mostly because they cost more than I could afford at the time. With the sword market the way it is, we're flooded with new and better products at prices for the average consumer- now I KNOW I won't get one, but I like what you've done with it.
