Hey gang, Getting back into training with a dojo I belonged to a long time ago....and they have added a lot more Naginata since I was last with them. Anyway, I like having real version of what I train with... I have a "trainer" kat for getting back into things and a decent kat for cutting and when I get back up to speed with my iaijutsu / iaido... so now I'm wondering if anyone knows a source for a practical Naginata? If not, has anyone seen decent blades that can be finished/polished and mounted to make such a beast? I'm after something in a traditional Japanese design. Cheers ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

As an update, the only one I've been able to find from a web search is a Hanwei...everything else seems to be Padau based or somewhat like an o-dachi with a slightly longer handle.

The only decent fully mounted naginata out there is the hanwei. However, Kris Cutlery sells a nice blade. Our chopchop has a good thread of his mounting one of these. kriscutlery.com/documents/japanese.html/index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=1846

Buy a kris blade and either mount it yourself or get someone to mount it for you, barring that, buy this; ![](http://www.atar.com/old/images/pagemaster/MVC036F.JPG) Mount it yourself or find someone to mount it.

Well, giving my somewhat limited skills in making woodworks for bladed weapons (see here /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=7285 ) I don't know if it is an overly great "starter" project. I'll mull the idea of a DIY over for a bit (at least until I get the Wakazashi to match my 1601) and go from there.

That doesn't look bad, there, bloodwraith. What exactly might that be? kronan, can't blame you for hesitating on self-mounting. Not something I'd attempt, either. Nevertheless, an idea. ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Yeah atar has some spectacularly cheap deals, they even have a nagimaki I've had an eye on which is $550 but unfortunately I don't have that much.

Yeah, I saw the nagimaki; very nice.
They have a couple tantos that are tempting me, too...

Everything[/b] on that site tempts me and the thought of getting a custom made cable or twist core is even more tempting.

I'm not much for cable or the like, but those are some fine-looking blades...
kronan, any luck?

Not much, I'm afraid....tried doing some more digging and if I want something in a more traditional Japanese style, it looks like my options are the Hanwei or doing something up myself. Chopchop's hand/home made version looks great, though I would likely see about getting some hardware from VA to match it to my Kat and (future) wakazashi if I go the DIY route. My main concern with the DIY is I'd likely use the same sort of oak I used for that rapier "saya" which means I'll need to get a good chisel set to do the carving... the rapier saya took forever and a day trying to work with a devil tool (dremel). On the plus side, I've got time to decide yet....
