The other day, while hacking stuff with my MRL Late period War Axe, I couldn't help but feel hindered by its weight, even though the weight is modest. After a few one handed swings, it starts to feel slow.
I then pulled out my 75 cm Ice Axe. Now, I know that this is a modern tool, and not a fantasy weapon, but...
It is wicked fast, the adze axe head hits like a hammer, and the backspike is vicious. I had thoughts of customizing this thing to look and feel like a fantasy weapon. Its light weight is an asset, and if I had to choose my MRL axe, or this ice axe for a fight, right now, I'd be hard pressed to choose.
Thoughts.

While I have never handled exactly your axe I know what you mean by the axe seeming slow. I get annoyed by this quite fast, but using an Ice Axe instead... never thought of that. I'd say go for it. When you modified it and find it pleasing you have won an interesting new weapon, if not, well, you have become a little wiser. A nice customization tread wouldn't hurt the rest of us either What were you planning on doing?

Ice axes strike me as very kama-like. It seems to me that you would end up with a badass looking kama.

I wonder of the aluminum alloy handle is an advantage. It's light, and seems durable, but if it parried a sword blow, would it hold up as well as a wood handle?
I'm thinking about experimenting with that. Has anyone ever taken a sword to aluminum alloy tubing?

I'm curious as to what is being discussed here. Is this an axe used to cut ice, or one of those ice climbing tools? Post a pic if you can.
