Ok, long story short, my dad fell in love with the basket hilt claymores (or basket hilt broadsword, depending on your preference) and I would like to buy him one at some point (when we're not so badly off financially). I've looked at the Hanwei one, but there are a lot more options than I had with my two-handed claymore.
Could anyone give me some opinions on which make I should be looking into? I'd like to have some idea what to shoot for when I can afford it...

Alchem make a nice blunt basket hilt that you can practice with. Its about $180. I have found that basket hilts make all the sense in the world. They do not restrict movement at all. Here is a picture at the bottom of this page: mysite.verizon.net/tsafa1/rapier/alchemlongsword.html

Actually I'm looking for a functional one, not a practice sword...something that can actually cut. He saw the Cold Steel demo video, but something tells me it would be the same as their other swords: Tough as nails but heavy and poorly balanced.
I see some lovely ones, especially the ones that are made in Scotland...certainly not anything I'll be able to afford any time soon sadly. I am still keeping my eye on the Hanwei one, but I want to make sure there's nothing better in the price range first...

Yes, the CS basket-hilts a sharp crowbars. I've known several people that's had them and didn't keep them long because they were so clunky and unweilding.
Hanwei's are nice for the price, but if can go the extra mile Armour Class is the way to go without going full custom made.
The GGGodwins & Military Heritage one's are OK for re-enactment purposes but that's about it.
One of the guys in our sword guild collections antique Scottish basket-hilts and has some very, very nice & rare originals.
cheers,
Bill

Hmmm, the Armor Class ones are really something to look at. I will keep my eye on those...here's hoping I'm successful with my next buisness venture...
Thanks a lot for the opinions guys!
