What if we want to learn a specific tidbit about history ?

World renown historians are unbelievable unreliable in this field. Learning from books takes time to read the book and then form opinions about whether or not thw opinion expressed by the author is accurate.
Or, you could be a part of a forum of individuals who are interested in the same thing and are essentially compiling all of their knowledge together. Asking the forum as a whole is the fastest way to get a piece of information (providing the info isn't terribly well known like "who was joan or arc?").
I agree with what you're saying with the exception of this one part - but I'm involved with sword forums to learn and spread my own knowledge, though I'm sure what you're saying about social interaction is equally important towards my being here as well. I enjoy this place far too much, come to think of it ;D

Well call me flattered ;D
Fact checking is good, however I often find that if it's a specific piece of info in which no harm is done in assuming it's veracity then it might be best to believe it, at least for the time being. If I fact checked every argument I've ever been in I'd still not be halfway done!
Sorry about the winking smily, if it unnerves you I won't use it.

What the ..... is this?!
So you can learn personal experience with say, sword making by reading books? Or you can learn what the general community thinks of a specific company by searching google?
Or you can talk and commute with your fellow people who share the same interests as you by searching wikipedia? Or maybe you can get advice on your first purchase from a text book?
There's a plethora of things you can learn from talking to people who share interests with you that you cannot learn from a book or a website.

In other words, to commute with one another, exchanging opinions etc.

Is that not extremely frowned upon.

I offer my apologies. My commentary was so idiotic, that I wanted to remove it before it offended and confused more people than you fellows. Once again I am sorry.

I had to re-read the beginnings of this - at first, I thought you were having discussions with yourself (I've seen it done); ;D then it dawned on me that someone had beat a hasty retreat with his comments. If you never put your foot in your mouth - how can you have an opinion on the flavor of leather? On the original: I've read a lot of books and worked with others of like interest. Forums are often a fast source of good, bad and confusing information. But a combination of all gets me closer to the most satisfying results. Gleaning tidbits is what attracts me to forums - besides humor and great pix!
