Hey guys...do any of you have any experience with Admiral's 1075/1080? I know you were using 1075 Sam, but if I recall wasn't that from a custom melt? The reason I'm asking is that I can only get 1065 in 1 1/4x1/4" bars. I can get the 1075/1080 in 1"x1/4" bars...which will make forming my sunobe a hell of a lot less work. I know the extra carbon won't hurt either...I'm just worried about all the manganese, plus, Admiral from my understanding isn't so well known for their precise melts =/.
My requirements are of course something that I can put a hamon on lol. If it's something I can get around it's worth ordering I think. $15 a 5' stick isn't too bad, as long as it's workable for Japanese style blades.
Anyhow, let me know please if you can...I'd like to make an order Monday if possible =).

I've been using admiral's 1075/80 for my blades but I don't do any forging.

The 1075 from admiral is great stuff, both that long katana I posted in the toshi as well as my Bruchort and the Otanto are admiral 1075, all have amazing hamon.
I have a bunch of 1077 from Aldo that I use now, but I sure would like to get some of that 1075 from Admiral.

Cool...since you have experience with it, and it's the same steel you got those hamon from...I'll go ahead and pick some up. Oh just one more thing just to clarify...was yours just '1075' or was it the same 1075/1080 they offer now? I guess the only real difference is a bit more carbon...as the mn range is the same. Wish they could consistently supply the low mn stuff =/. www.admiralsteel.com/shop/HR 1075/1080 C=.70/.83 Mn=.30/.80 Cris

Looks like basically the same stuff: 1074/1075 = C .69/.80 Mn .40/.80 vs. 1075/1080 - C=.70/.83 Mn=.30/.80 I wonder why in the blade steel online catalog, it's labeled 1075/1080...but in the link you posted it's 1074/1075 lol? I'll have to call them monday and see. Cris

Gonna be getting me a bar of some of the 1050 soon . Thought you just said you wanted the 1075?!? =p You going to use it for the katana video quench? Or are you going to follow Kevin's advice and use a higher carbon so we can watch your work go 'PING!!!' lol. I really can't wait to get this stuff. Should make beautiful Japanese blades, and the mass lost to fire scale will be far less than my 1060 clips, due to it being 1" wide already, and basically just needing some nudges to put it into sunobe form. I lost a ton of mass to scale pounding out that wakizashi...like literally 1/4 of the weight. With this stuff I think the wastage will be far, far less. Starting with properly sized stock should be the second commandment of bladesmithing...right after 'Thou shalt not forge on a CRAP anvil!!' It's definately going to be fun trying to gauge what kind of growth in length I'm going to get though. It was pure dumb luck the osoraku worked out to the requested measurements. I hot cut the point, thinking I was going to have excess as a safety factor...and it turned out barely just right =X. Always something to learn eh? Cris

I would like to get some 1075 too but I got an offer to trade for some of the 1050 . I think I will use 1050 or 1095 for the video.
