am currently building a cuttoe sword for a rev war NCO impression which I will carry along with my halberd. I am worried this tang of the blade I have is too thin for a functional sword. I like my swords to be as tough as the origionals if possible. This blade is from a Windlass English cutlass and I plan on adding a guard with quillions which I had custom cast and I plan on making a spiraled grip like washingtons cuttoe has but in walnut instead of the bone his has. I can cut about an inch into the blade to extend and widen the tang if needed which would leave the blade at 24'' but if you guys think it is OK as is Ill leave it. I know some historical swords had supriseingly thin tangs and despite being thin this one seems strong and well made.

Looks kind of small, yeah. I mean it should work - there is a limit how wide the tang can be and with this kind of sword they generally are pretty lean, maybe get a file or sandpaper and round off the tang shoulders a bit though, looks pretty square too. The most likely place I have seen damage is above and below the guard, so you could grind in, make a longer tang with a wider section that stretches a bit below the guard into the grip or just make a slot in the guard and cement it in place. It won't be a tank with that tang but functional enough.
