Hello All.
I am awaiting a shipment from LK Chen for the Munich Town Guard. I would like to buy or possibly make something that is roughly in the same weight and length that I can not hurt myself with, badly.
I am more concerned with swinging around something of equal weight and length, than specifically mirroring the LK Chen specs.
What might you with WAY more experience than I have, which is damn little, come up with to train with a safer equivalent?
Thanks in advance. This from LK Chen website. Total Length: 102 cm (40.15") Blade Length: 80 cm (31.49") Width at guard: 45 mm Taper to acute sharp point at the tip. Thickness near the hilt: 6.5 mm Thickness near the tip: 2 mm Weight: 1419 g (3 lb. 2 ounces) Point Of Balance at approx. 3 cm from hilt. Blade Profile Diamond Shape

Due to its weight at least part of it (mostly grip and guard) would need to be made from metal. For the blade wood, polypropylene or something similar would work, but the weight would be a few hundread grams at most so the rest would need to be made up by the grip. You could buy a polypropylen sword from Cold Steel and add a metal guard or at least weigh down the grip to get a similar weight but it will still feel different to the real thing.

Is a blunt version of the sword out of the question?

If you get the right wood, it can be surprisingly close in weight and feel to the steel. It's not as dense, but you can't make a wooden sword as thin as a steel sword. If you make your own bokken, you can also make adjustments until it feels right. I got Cold Steel's polypropylene katana for my nephew, and I was pretty impressed with the weight and feel of it for training. Overall I prefer a bokken, but it wasn't bad. I like hickory a lot for bokken, I got the kingfisher ones, and I bought more hickory to make my naginata pole. But for a more euro style sword, probably making your own is the best bet so it feels right. You could probably get away with a wooden handle, but I agree it would be helpful to have a guard on it. I think a big part of acclimatizing to these types of swords is learning to work around the guard.

I think you probably have to wait longer for a dull version of the blade to become available. Unless you can find a Windlass somewhere on sale (even there is a chance it comes sharp). Also wouldn't be 1:1 comparable, the Windlass is said to be a lot clumsier when moving. You could also put something like a few layers of painters tape or cardboard on the edges of a sharp blade. Tape, as long as it's not dragged or impacted on skin with a lot of force, is pretty good at preventing the edge from cutting you.
Or you can buy a plastic pipe of the correct diameter (look that it isn't PVC since it's nasty stuff to work with, ABS, PP or PE would work), heat it, push it flat and put that over the blade. Either painters tape or string to fix it to the guard. None of these you should try to strike anything with but likely would prevent serious injuries (a dull blade still can be pretty damaging).

LK Chen is very responsive to emails. You could ask if they could make a blunt or sport combat version of the Munich. The Munich is my favorite LK Chen Euro sword, so I could see buying a practice version.

There's a blunt version of the Hanwei or Kingston Arms Renaissance Side sword.

There's a blunt version of the Hanwei or Kingston Arms Renaissance Side sword. Is the sidesword with exchangeable blade or is that only the rapiers? I was sure the sidesword also had a blade exchange option, but I can't find the bades.

Afaik it's not a changeable blade. I looked up the Case Iberia homepage and there are two blunt training sideswords, one from Hanwei is discontinued, the Kingston Arms one is available. But nothing about changeable blades.
