As you may know, I am doing my best to try and do something like revive the defunct review team - folk who are happy to take some good photos of a sword from all angles, write a little about it's best and worst qualities and give a quick summary with a few cutting videos..
Sadly this one (like many) will be USA only due to the stupidity about shipping swords from the USA (but okay direct from China - but that's too close to politics, and we don't talk about that semprini here)..
Anyway, the gist of it is we have 5 new sub $100 Katana made from monotempered 65mn Spring Steel with engraved blade called the 'HORIMONO COLLECTION' - below is the ad.
If it had sold well, we could have kept the price at $80, but they are not popular at all - so maybe if we can prove they can actually cut, are well tempered and wont fall apart - we can sell enough to keep the forge happy and provide a discount price so people who are into budget blades will at least consider it a viable option (OR we find an issue that is enough to drop the line entirely and tell Ryujin to try again)..
As before, just let post your interest and general experience as well as the order that you like the swords in.
Because these are so affordable, we might send these to a few different people to get various perspectives, so let us know which ones and in which order you like and test them hard!

I would not engrave the blade on the cheap ones. It might be a good blade but at that price point I bet most will instantly think "wallhanger". Just my 5c.
Many people won't know what steel is good steel and won't trust the description saying how tough and usable they are since there are a lot of shady ones around saying the same. And probably not flashy enough for people to buy purely for looks.

Paul,
I'll test and review anything that you send me, and I have been impressed with the DH Ryujins, but I feel that the negative common to this entire new category of their line is what looks like an etched hamon on a monotempered sword. I also don't like fake anything on a sword, and plastic same is a particular problem, IMHO. Fake same never holds the tsuka ito in place properly compared to rayskin.
The iron and brass fittings are pluses, however, and the blade should be strong and durable. The edge holding needs evaluation in the field.
I like the style of the kurikara horimono, tsuba design, and black ito on on #5 best, followed by #1, then #3, #4, and finally #2.
I'm curious to test one of these, and see what happens.

I'm open to testing and reviewing any of these sample swords, I am a J.S.A practitioner, and I have done a bit of cutting at this point of time already with tatami mats and the like with my training. Happy to see how the handling and performance of one of them feels like, and to post my review and thoughts on it after.
