When someone tries to start an argument with me concerning something that he clearly doesn't have knowledge of - I freeze, look him in the eye with my best look of disbelief - then roll away in loud, teary, belly laughter. That usually ends the discussion and prevents future breach. /

And that Mad Jack Churchill fellow had his Claymore out when he charged onto Normandy. That is one BAMF. I think that about sums him up. There's a lot of info about him out there, it's been a while since I've read it...interesting stuff. I can't believe this guy survived WWII. He also had small roles in a couple movies because of his archery skills. Yes, he also used a bow in WWII. Oh, and he played bagpipes. He wasn't even Scottish but he had a lifelong love of Scottish culture. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_ChurchillHe once said "any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed." -Jonathan

Thanks for the support guys, I gotta admit I was a little drunk when I posted this last night. I didn't know what to expect when I checked in on it. I really appreciate the support as it was truly a very frustrating experience. The sad thing is one of the people arguing with me was a history major! If one thing I learned is how ignorant most people are to the history of swords. I really can't wait till this Reclaiming the Blade documentary comes out, hopefully it will be mainstream enough for people to get a better understanding of the history of swords. Anyway thanks again for helping me clear this up, really helped my sanity. Wish I could have had you guys fighting on my corner last night!

This Thanksgiving I got [censored]in' laughed at when I mentioned I had a "15th Century sword." Not because I owned a sword, but because "Swords weren't used in the 15th century. Guns were used instead. " This literally went on most of the night as I defended that swords were in fact used.. Can someone please clear this debate up for me.. I'm going out of my mind! Does this person realize that the 15th century was the middle ages (or early renaissance, depending on what country we're talking about)? I mean, I think he/she may be confused as to what time period you were talking about. I could see someone being confused as to whether swords were used in the Revolutionary War, for example, but that wasn't until the 18th century. You could mention/show him/her the martial arts manuals of Ringeck, Talhoffer, Danzig, Liberi and Vadi, all of which were written in the 15th century and dealt with weapons commonly used at the time, including longswords, arming swords and messers. And if that's not enough, try the manuals of Dürer, Mair, Meyer, Manciolino, Marozzo, Agrippa, di Grassi, Saviolo and Silver, all of which were written in the 16th century, a century after the time in question, and dealt with weapons commonly used that the time, including swords. And if that STILL isn't enough, how about the works of Fabis, Cappo Ferro and Swetnam, written in the early 17th century, which all dealt primarily with the use of SWORDS!

Just because he is a history major doesn't mean diddly squat about his sword knowledge. I have done a great deal of history myself and had I not actually taken the time to look at swords as well I would not have known what weapons were being used in most eras because textbooks and historical books don't really go into weapons unless they are a book specifically about weapons and then you don't get much of the history.

Just look at your 1812 history. The French had three types of calvary and the sword was there major weapon.
