Hi all folks a bit of a random one... i was scanning auctions, and I spotted a random entry of 2 pieces of rust that intrigued me. one of the 2 is an IX, which might tempt me, but the second one, is really leaving me puzzled... bear with here, there's very little pictures to go by, but I'm really not sure what I'm looking at here... it's a french auction, so I kinda gave for granted it's a french blades I'm looking at, but what is this? is this somehow a frankestein sword? is this a copy of a "chasseurs de vincennes" sword? that screaming face on the back of the grip, is really something I cannot place... anyway, any thought/idea is much appreciated...thanks!

The face is Medusa...a common decorative motif. Jean Ondry shows a number of these with basically identical guards for M1845 Sabre of Adjutants and Infantry Officers of the Marines....of course with the addition of an anchor on the flags.
Blade looks odd, but mebbe it is just a bit of a zhuzhed up version of a Sabre D'Adjutant et d'Officier d'Infantrie Mle 1845 (1855).

that's the thing that also annoys me - I don't know what was the winning bid. it was a fairly small auction with no live, so I know I didn't win, but have no idea how much it went for as could not get auctions reuslts.
