I'm looking for a medieval horseman's sword for re-enactment and solo practise. In the UK at around the £200 ($250-ish?) mark. I've found one that looks close to what I'm after from Deepeeka - www.kultofathena.com/product/st-annen-sword/?srsltid=AfmBOooocftrjR3oYhCPiIwM3j_w8DBayBxp2F_0w4t6y0Mt8igI8VhK . This is on the KoA site but there is also a European supplier. I know that Deepeeka have a...spotty...reputation. This sword looks to be heavy and with almost no distal taper. I'd be looking at this for a bit of a project, to try improving the hilt and scabbard and possibly getting it sharpened. Is this worth it for what I'm after? As an aside, is it possible to add distal taper to a blade - grinding, filing - without ruining the heat treatment?

I mean it is possible to do it, but I am not sure you'd get it nice looking again on your first try. It depends with Deepeeka, they have heat treated blades that seem solid, but not all they offer are heat treated (St.Annen should be though). This one is pretty hefty, but the broad blades often are (not that a bit of taper would hurt). Windlass has a few that are pretty similar, you won't find a light one around in this class, especially in that price range - maybe Ronin, are hefty too though. If you aren't using the sword to bash stuff Deepeeka is fine, but they also seem to be able to produce good ones - although their QC is sometimes bad, that is true.

In that price range, I would opt for a Hanwei over a Deepeeka. The Hanwei Tinker line gets a lot of love. The one I have is pretty good, though it has been rehilted. www.kultofathena.com/product/hanwei-tinker-pearce-sharpened-single-hand-sword/It is not reasonably possible to substantially taper a heat treated blade without ruining the temper. It might be technically possible, but it would take a whole lot of time, work, and materials. Removing material from hardened steel is… hard. If you are ok with the look of the hilt, the Hanwei Cawood is also a Type XII. It isn’t the inexpensive super bargain it used to be, but it’s my favorite sword under $500. www.kultofathena.com/product/hanwei-cawood-sword/
