It's a sort of acid wash, which is how they put the patterns on virtually every modern knife and sword. If you're careful, it shouldn't weaken or damage it. If it's a plain monosteel katana, there's not much point though. If it was differentially hardened, you'll see the hamon and maybe some welding lines if the sword was laminated. "damascus" style steel, you'll also see something. None of this is traditional though, but it's reasonable to do if you wish.
