I picked up a Deepeeka Mainz gladius san scabbard from another member. My Newphew absolutely loves it, so I decided to give it to him for his birthday and made a scabbard and scutum to go along with it. I have only ever made 2 relatively authentic Viking era shields (did not make home made paints) and had not made a scutum before. Just used the three sheets of luan glued together with linen front and back. Did use red milk paint, but used modern paints for the accents. Was too cheap, too lazy, and to inexperienced to try any brass work on either the scabbard or the scutum so the boss is purchased and the scutum border and shield trimming are leather (painted in the case of the scabbard). I waxed the surface of the scutum, but it dried opaque...not sure how to put the beeswax on without that happening. So tried to use a heat gun to heat it, thin it, have it lay more evenly. Helped a bit, but also got streaky. Be kind, my first time. Attachments:

Saw them on Reddit. They look great. I’m sure he’ll be trilled.

I hope so, I spent a silly amount of time and $ on them, lol, between wood, paints, leather, the umbo, building a frame to actually shape the shield, etc. It was fun, though. Just wish I was not such a hamfisted clutz with the fine painting.
