Hi
New to sword collecting and this forum
Would like som help identify a pair of Briquets I bought,
I have some question
Are they French or made for the French army, think I have seen something about the RFD being som mark used by the French.
If not French what can they be?
There are no markings on the hilt, al markings are on the blades.
Markings for the first one dated 1??6 and number two 1810 or possible 1813
Both handles has 28 ribbs. Total length 86 cm. and blade 72 cm.
Blade edge goes al the way to the hilt with a bend of aprox. 24 mm hight in center.
Blade thickness at base is 4mm and tapper to 3,5mm in approx 6o-70m, in the last 540mm towards the topp it tappers to 2.5mm and ends in a point sharpened on both sides to 1-1.5 mm.
The steel is very hard and not easily bent.
Blade is completely smooth and tappers down to 1.2mm befor the edge. So very little transition between edge and blade.
The first picture is a repair done by replacing the wedge that was used to secure the blade with (as far as I can under stand) wit a broken tip from a smallsword or similar. it is absolutely rock solid and been there for a long long time.
Thitd ipic is a makers mark and so is last two in the second row of pics. The blades are very similar to Napoleons guards briquets apart from the handle.
They years 1??6 most likely is 1806 as I see it, with some reservation for 1810 that could be 1813.
A good tip from madirish was that they could be Spanish. No luck so far, there are some with long blades but much later and the ones I have found are with a straight blade but its a lead worth follow.
There are some engraved identification markings on the blade and this make me believe that these has come out of some officers mess or small regimantal museum where the regiments been closed down and the content were sold off 20-30 years ago.
