I am wondering if there would be a way to pull the black dye from the scabbard and grip leather on my Windlass arbedo? What I would like to do it Dye the scabbard and grip leather a dark red and then blue the scabbard fittings and hilt and pommel black. I remember reading a post by bill blake years ago where he dyed the sheath on his windlass Hungarian saber purple to make it look more like a byzantine Parameion so it seems like it is possible.

There are a few products you can use to remove the dye. IMHO the best option is Fiebing's deglazer. It's specifically designed to remove the finish from leather.
Some of us have also used acetone or nail polish remover (which is diluted acetone), but I've had mixed results with that personally. Used it on a Windlass grip and scabbard: the scabbard stripped fairly well but the grip didn't.
Hope that helps, Alan

I'd be curious to try. My experience with deglazer is that it removes the finish but I don't think it w can remove the dye.

it will remove some of the dye, but probably not enough to cleanly re-dye as red over what was black. Much easier to go the other way.
