The 1796 LCS by Windlass is quite nice. If the heavy turns out to be equally true to the historical pattern, this will be quite a sword.
Dare I hope Windlass is on a roll?

It will be very interesting to see reviews with a side-by-side comparison to an original. I have handled an original 1796HC and wanted a good repro ever since.

It does look off somehow. Can't put my finger on it. But I think the guard is too straight and the corners are too sharp - also something about the rivets holding the diamond shaped plate.

Those of you who don't like the look. You don't like the inherit design or as a replica of a 1796 HC?
I can't see what's wrong with it, but I'm not super familiar with the sword. I'm looking at some images right now and it looks well within spec.

it is just like a Viking-era single edge sword with a much better hand guard
what's not to love?

Not loving the inherent design. But I'd love to handle one.

The hilt looks like flimsy sheet metal work crapped out by the lowest bidder on a modern government contract, not a handcrafted product of the Napoleonic period. Compare it to an original, and it will jump out at you.

Thanks for the link. I prefer examples like IX.1272 and IX.706 where the guard plates are dished rather than flat, and the guard edges are rounded or rolled.

I agree, but those examples seem to be using thin guards like the Windlass. I'm curious how on purpose the shaping was or if that's just the thin steel bending during assembly, carrying, usage, and/or storage. That said, it shouldn't be hard to get the replica to look like that, provided they don't use brittle steel. Aesthetically I agree that a thicker guard looks better and a more shapely guard looks better. This is my favorite of the RA's collection: royalarmouries.org/collection/object/object-76403If only...
