I'm looking for an early Bugei katana from around 2000 ish when they were claiming to use Manchurian rail steel. I'm also interested in information about the early Bugei swords.

That may be tough to find. I have a 2003 Dragonfly and that was K120C folded so your timeline is correct to find a railway steel sword. Keeping an eye on ebay may be the best bet but it probably wouldnt hurt to try to contact Bugei directly also.

Honestly you'd have better luck tracking down a gunto made from rail steel than a 20 year old production sword. Good luck.

I once had a rail steel Bugei Samurai. After that I had a K120C Bugei Samurai. I have used both for cutting to some extend and my experiences lend me to believe that the rail steel sword had the stronger and more robust blade, and to be honest, superior to the K120C in all but aesthetics (if you like deeply etched, contrasting hamons, like typical Hanwei stuff). The rail steel hamon was very subtle in comparison, but it might not be the steel, but the technique and polishing they used back in the days.
All in all, I've cut a lot of meat with that rail steel Samurai, and during one botched overcut I stroke the kissaki in the concrete floor. That same strike would have deformed (or worse) any lesser blade. On the Samurai, it made only a rather cosmetic issue.
So, if you happen to find one rail steel Bugei in good condition, buy it. Will not regret.
